Spending five figures on a square watch takes real conviction. Most buyers looking at a Santos have already lived with round watches and know how to size them. The Santos plays by different rules, and the pre-owned market plays even rougher.
Most buying guides skip the parts that matter to a serious collector: how the references differ on the wrist, how to size a square case, and what a dealer checks before committing to a pre-owned example.
This Cartier Santos buying guide covers every reference worth knowing, where real market values sit in 2026, and which Santos models are currently in inventory at Majestix.
Cartier Brand Overview
Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 and built a watchmaking reputation alongside its jewelry. The famous lines are Tank, Ballon Bleu, Panthère, and the Santos, which is the oldest line still in production. Cartier sold the first Santos in 1904 to Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, which makes it widely considered the first purpose-built men’s wristwatch.
The collection got an in-house movement and a full redesign in 2018. It now sits at the entry point of the haute horlogerie tier, priced under Royal Oak and Nautilus but carrying the same integrated-bracelet and exposed-screw DNA. For a wider look at the brand’s catalog, our full Cartier brand overview covers the Tank, Panthère, and Ballon Bleu alongside the Santos.
Quick Guide to the 3 Types of Cartier Santos
There are three families a collector should know before walking into a boutique or wiring on a pre-owned listing. Each targets a different wrist, wardrobe, and ownership philosophy.
1. Santos de Cartier
The Santos de Cartier, relaunched in 2018, is the right entry point for the vast majority of serious buyers. It runs on Cartier’s in-house calibre 1847 MC, an automatic movement with a 40-hour power reserve and protection against magnetism up to 1,500 Gauss. Water resistance is 100m. The 2018 redesign brought slimmer proportions than the Santos 100 it replaced.
The QuickSwitch system allows tool-free strap and bracelet swaps. Smartlink allows tool-free bracelet resizing. If you acquire a pre-owned example with a bracelet that’s a half-size off, Smartlink means you handle it yourself in 30 seconds, with no watchmaker and no scratches. Steel retail: Medium WSSA0029 at $7,750 and Large WSSA0018 at $8,650.

2. Santos-Dumont
The Santos-Dumont is thinner, dressier, and closer to the original 1904 design than any other Santos in production. It measures 7.3mm thick on quartz versions and 7.5mm on the mechanical XL, slim enough to slide under a French cuff without catching.
The Santos-Dumont XL (ref. WSSA0032) and the lacquered large (ref. WSSA0046) run the hand-wound mechanical calibre 430 MC, based on the well-regarded Piaget 430P. Quartz versions start at $4,800 and the mechanical XL is around $7,600 in steel. For the collector who wants the slimmest possible profile for formal settings, the Dumont earns its place.
Our Santos vs Dumont breakdown covers the differences in more detail. The minute track sits on the outer edge of the dial, the crown has no guard, and the watch sits notably lower on the wrist than the Santos de Cartier.

3. Santos 100
The Santos 100 (2004–2018) is worth considering pre-owned if you find a clean example. It’s boxier and heavier than the current Santos de Cartier, with a pronounced crown guard the new model dropped. Sizes ran from a 33mm Midsize up to the XL at 38mm wide and 41.3mm by 51mm including the crown guard.
The reference is 2656, and the W-prefix retail SKU is W20073X8. It’s the same watch in two reference styles you’ll see in listings. Clean examples trade $5,500–$7,500. The proportions feel dated next to the 2018 redesign, but a small camp of collectors prefers the boxier silhouette.

Pick the Right Santos Size
Square case sizing doesn’t follow the same logic as round watches. Most buyers come in assuming they’ll want the Large; try both on, and leave with the Medium.
Medium: For Wrists Under 18cm
The Medium in steel (WSSA0029) measures 35.1mm by 41.9mm and 8.83mm thick, and it wears like a 39–40mm round watch. If you’re used to a 40mm Submariner or a 39mm Datejust, the Medium feels comparable. The square geometry just reads more distinctively. For wrists under 18cm, Medium is almost always the better call. One note: the Medium is not offered with the ADLC bezel.
Large: For Bigger Wrists and the ADLC Option
The Large in steel (WSSA0018) measures 39.8mm by 47.5mm and 9.08mm thick, and it wears closer to a 44mm round watch. It adds a date window at 6 o’clock and is the only size offered with ADLC, a diamond-like carbon coating that makes the bezel substantially more scratch-resistant. For wrists at 18.5cm and above, the Large works proportionally. Below that, the 47.5mm lug-to-lug tends to feel like too much.
Top Cartier Santos Models We Recommend
These are Santos references currently available at Majestix Collection. Each is photographed in detail on the product page with condition notes, complete-set details, and a tour video on request.
1. Santos de Cartier Medium 35mm (WSSA0029)
The Medium silver-dial WSSA0029 is the right pick for most first-time Santos buyers and a frequent second watch for collectors who want a dress option that handles daily wear. The Roman numerals, blued sword hands, and clean opaline dial pull directly from Louis Cartier’s 1904 design vocabulary. Among collectors on WatchCrunch and WatchUSeek, this reference is consistently the most recommended Santos for wrists under 18cm.

2. Santos de Cartier 39.8mm Blue Dial (WSSA0030)
The blue-dial Large is one of the most requested current Santos references at Majestix. The sunray blue dial shifts noticeably under different light (flat navy indoors, brighter under daylight), giving the watch a contemporary feel without straying from the classic Santos identity.
- Case: 39.8mm × 47.5mm, 9.08mm thick, stainless steel
- Movement: Calibre 1847 MC automatic

3. Santos de Cartier Large Grey Dial ADLC (WSSA0037)
The grey-dial Large with ADLC bezel is the steel-and-black configuration most buyers picture when they say “stealth Santos.” The grey dial reads almost charcoal in low light and lightens to warm gunmetal in the sun. ADLC is meaningfully more scratch-resistant than polished steel, which addresses the single most common complaint about the line.
- Case: 39.8mm × 47.5mm, stainless steel with black ADLC bezel
- Movement: Calibre 1847 MC automatic

4. Santos de Cartier Titanium (WSSA0089)
The titanium Santos flips the script for collectors who already own a steel Santos. The case wears noticeably lighter on the wrist despite a larger 47.55mm length, and the matte finish reads as more contemporary than polished steel. A quiet flex, the kind of detail other watch people notice and casual observers miss.

5. Santos de Cartier Chronograph ADLC (WSSA0017)
The Santos Chronograph in steel with black ADLC bezel is the most sport-leaning configuration in the current catalog. The 43.3mm case wears bigger than its dimensions suggest because of the pushers, and the ADLC bezel addresses the single most common Santos complaint.
- Case: 43.3mm, stainless steel with black ADLC bezel
- Movement: Calibre 1904-CH MC automatic chronograph

6. Santos-Dumont XL Hand-Wound (WSSA0032)
The Dumont XL in steel on a blue alligator strap is the connoisseur’s Santos. The hand-wound calibre 430 MC is derived from the Piaget 430P, widely respected for its slim profile and finishing. At 7.5mm thick, it disappears under a cuff. This is the Santos for the buyer who already owns the modern Santos de Cartier and wants horological depth.
- Case: 46.6mm × 33.9mm, 7.5mm thick, stainless steel
- Movement: Calibre 430 MC hand-wound

7. Santos Skeleton 39.8mm (WHSA0007)
The Santos Skeleton is where Cartier’s haute horlogerie ambition for the line is most visible. The calibre 9611 MC is fully skeletonized, with the bridges shaped into the Roman numerals themselves. The dial is the movement. It is a frequently requested reference among collectors who already own several Cartier pieces and want a true statement of the brand’s watchmaking.
- Case: 39.8mm × 47.5mm, 9.08mm thick, stainless steel
- Movement: Calibre 9611 MC hand-wound, 72-hour reserve
- Dial: Skeletonized with Roman numeral bridges

8. Santos de Cartier 18k Rose Gold (WGSA0019)
The Large Santos in solid 18k rose gold on a blue alligator strap is a different category of watch entirely, the reference for collectors building a precious-metal rotation. The watch wears with serious presence. And the rose gold against the blued sword hands is one of the more striking dial combinations in the current catalog.

9. Santos Dumont Skeleton Micro-Rotor Rose Gold (WHSA0030)
The Dumont Skeleton with the micro-rotor in rose gold is the highest expression of the Santos line in the current Cartier catalog. The micro-rotor sits within the skeletonized movement plane rather than on top of it, preserving the slim Dumont profile while adding automatic winding. A piece that anchors a collection rather than rounding it out.
- Case: 41mm, 18k rose gold
- Movement: Skeletonized with micro-rotor, automatic
- Dial: Openworked

Pre-Owned vs. Retail in 2026
Most Santos buyers cross-shop new retail against the grey market. Our primer on authorized dealer versus grey market buying is worth a read before you commit.
Pre-Owned Santos Prices in 2026
The table below reflects completed sales and current listings from WatchCharts and Chrono24 as of 2026 (source).
| Reference | Model | Pre-Owned Range (USD) |
| WSSA0029 | Santos de Cartier Medium, steel | $5,900–$7,000 |
| WSSA0018 | Santos de Cartier Large, steel | $6,500–$7,500 |
| WSSA0032 | Santos-Dumont XL hand-wound | $6,200–$7,400 |
| Ref. 2656 | Santos 100 XL, steel | $5,500–$7,500 |
| WHSA0007 | Santos Skeleton, steel | $18,000–$24,000 |
If you’re considering buying a Santos through Chrono24, our walkthrough on buying through the platform covers what to verify before you wire any money.
Add 10–20% if the watch comes with full box and papers, roughly $650–$1,300 on a $6,500 watch.
New vs. Pre-Owned: Is the Warranty Worth It
New retail: $7,750 for the Medium WSSA0029 and $8,650 for the Large WSSA0018. A pre-owned WSSA0029 in excellent condition runs $6,200–$6,800, so the gap is roughly $950–$1,550 before tax. Cartier’s “8-year warranty” is technically a 2-year international warranty that extends to 8 years total only if registered through Cartier Care during the initial 2-year window.
Our quick read on what a watch warranty actually covers breaks down the inclusions and exclusions. For peace of mind, new makes sense. For someone comfortable with pre-owned due diligence, the grey market is the smarter play.
Box and Papers: What They Add to Resale
Box and papers add 10–20% to resale value, which is roughly $650–$1,300 on a $6,500 watch. If you plan to sell within five years, buy complete. If you’re keeping the watch long-term, the papers premium is optional.
Papers matter most for pre-owned examples whose Cartier Care extension is still active. The warranty card is the proof. Without it, the next buyer assumes worst case.
How to Inspect a Pre-Owned Cartier Santos
Our pre-owned watch inspection checklist covers the universal points across brands. These five are specific to the Santos.
Check the Dial Printing Before Anything Else
A genuine Cartier Santos dial has crisp, even text under magnification, with every letter weighted consistently. On a refinished or counterfeit dial, the Cartier text looks soft or unevenly placed. This is the fastest authentication tell, and you can do it with a loupe or a phone camera in macro mode. If the seller won’t provide a close-up under direct light, that itself is information.
Inspect the Bezel Screws for Rounding
The eight bezel screws are the most commonly damaged part of any used Santos. Check the heads for rounding. If someone uses the wrong screwdriver, the heads lose their sharp edges. Replacement screws exist but rarely match the original finishing exactly, especially on two-tone or gold-bezel models.
Assess the Bracelet for Stretch and Link Damage
Santos bracelets stretch with wear. Hold the watch at each end and check for excessive play between the links. There should be almost none on a healthy bracelet. A stretched or damaged OEM bracelet costs $400–$800 to replace. Factor that into the price you’re willing to pay.
Spot an Over-Polished Case
Santos’s look depends on precise transitions between brushed and polished surfaces. A mirror-polished case has been buffed down. Check the lug edges and case sides under raking light. If everything catches the light the same way, the case has been polished. Walk away or negotiate hard.
Test the QuickSwitch Pins on 2018+ Models
Press the release and check that the bracelet seats firmly with zero wobble. On high-use examples, these pins wear. Easy to check in 10 seconds.
Ownership Costs Most Buyers Overlook
The Santos is often discussed in terms of design, size, and wrist presence, but ownership costs matter just as much. Servicing, strap options, and pre-owned maintenance history can all affect the true cost of the watch after purchase.
- Calibre 1847 MC servicing: The calibre 1847 MC should be serviced every 5–7 years.
- Official Cartier service cost: Cartier official service typically runs around $600–$900.
- Pre-owned buying tip: If you are buying pre-owned with no service history, budget for a service after purchase.
- Independent servicing: Independent watchmakers can usually service the 1847 MC for less, but confirm they have Cartier movement experience first.
- QuickSwitch strap compatibility: The QuickSwitch system on 2018+ Santos de Cartier models works with aftermarket straps from Artem, Rubber B, and Delugs.
- Rubber strap cost: A quality rubber strap usually costs around $150–$400 and can change the character of the watch completely.
- Dumont and Santos 100 straps: The Cartier Santos Dumont and Santos 100 use standard spring bars, so aftermarket strap compatibility is much wider.
Where the Santos Fits in a Collection
The harder question for most collectors isn’t which Santos to buy first. It’s where the Santos sits alongside the watches already in rotation. Three questions come up most often in collector conversations at Majestix.
Santos Alongside a Royal Oak: Do You Need Both?

The Santos and the Royal Oak share design DNA: integrated bracelet, exposed screws, geometric steel case. A collector who already owns a Royal Oak often asks whether the Santos is redundant. It isn’t. The Royal Oak reads as sport-luxury and wears tall on the wrist. The Santos reads as classical Cartier and wears flatter. Most collectors who own both end up rotating them by wardrobe, not occasion. If AP is on the list but not yet acquired, our Royal Oak buying guide walks through references and what to expect on the wait.
Santos as a Dress Watch: Dumont vs. a Standard Dress Reference

A collector building a dress rotation usually has a JLC Reverso, a Patek Calatrava, or a Datejust in the slot the Santos competes for. The Dumont XL with the calibre 430 MC is the Santos that holds its own here. Quartz Dumont variants land closer to “elegant second watch” than serious dress piece. The Medium WSSA0029 splits the difference and works as a dress-leaning daily, which is why it’s the most common second Santos in a collector’s lineup. Our Santos vs Datejust comparison covers the dress-versus-daily question in detail.
Santos at the Top of a Collection: Skeleton and Precious-Metal Plays

For collectors going deeper, the Santos line has genuine haute horlogerie ceiling. The Santos Skeleton WHSA0007 reads as a movement showcase, not a Santos with a transparent dial. The Dumont Skeleton Micro-Rotor in rose gold (WHSA0030) goes one step further. The 18k rose gold WGSA0019 sits in a different category from any steel Santos and works as the precious-metal anchor of a Cartier-focused collection. These are the Santos references that earn their slot in a serious lineup, not the entry points.
Final Thoughts on the Cartier Santos Buying Guide
The Santos de Cartier Medium WSSA0029 in steel is the safest starting point for most collectors. It wears well, has a strong modern movement, and usually offers better value pre-owned than at retail.
For collectors who want something more distinctive, the blue-dial WSSA0030, ADLC-bezel WSSA0037, Santos-Dumont XL, and Santos Skeleton WHSA0007 are the models worth a closer look.
Before buying, try both Medium and Large if possible. The size difference feels bigger in person than it looks online. If buying pre-owned, prioritize case condition over box and papers. A sharp, unpolished case matters more than a complete set on a heavily polished watch.
Still deciding? Message the Majestix team for on-wrist videos, sizing references, macro shots, condition notes, or help sourcing a specific Santos reference.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cartier Santos a good watch for daily wear?
Yes. The polished bezel is the main caveat, since it scratches visibly with normal use. Collectors who want pristine wrist presence should consider the ADLC bezel variant on the Large size.
What is the difference between Santos de Cartier and Santos-Dumont?
The Santos de Cartier is the sportier, automatic-movement version with an integrated bracelet. The Santos-Dumont is the dressier, slimmer model on a leather strap. The Dumont is closer to the original 1904 design and comes in both quartz and hand-wound mechanical (calibre 430 MC) versions.
Is Cartier Santos a good investment?
The Santos de Cartier has solid value retention rather than appreciation upside. The WSSA0029 retains approximately 84% of retail per WatchCharts (2026), and the collection appreciated roughly 14% over five years. It doesn’t trade above retail like Royal Oak or Nautilus. Buy it to wear it.
How long does a Cartier Santos service take?
An official Cartier service typically takes 4–8 weeks. Independent watchmakers with Cartier experience can often turn it faster and charge less than Cartier’s $600–$900 official rate. Our guide on where to source a pre-owned watch you can actually trust covers what separates reputable dealers from risky listings.
