Three panda dial chronographs lined up: Rolex Daytona white dial, Omega Speedmaster black dial, and Tudor white dial on beige background

What makes the best panda dial watches worth the money? It comes down to the dial: a light face with dark subdials that stand out. Easy to love, but not always easy to price.

The same look shows up on watches at wildly different prices. On some, it is a fair deal. On others, you pay a steep premium for the dial and little else, so it helps to know the difference.

In this guide, we cover what a panda dial is, the watches worth buying, panda versus reverse panda, the real cost of the look, and how to spot a fake.

What Is a Panda Dial Watch?

Extreme close-up of a Rolex Daytona white panda dial showing black subdials, red Daytona text, and Cosmograph markings

A panda dial is a white or light dial with dark subdials, usually 3 of them, at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. The dark circles on the pale background look like a panda’s face, which is where the name comes from.

On a chronograph, the high contrast lets you read the time at a glance, which mattered when the person reading it was driving at speed. That is still why the design works 60 years later.

A reverse panda is the same dial with a black dial with white subdials. It works the same way and has just as many fans. Both count as panda dials in normal use.

3 Best Everyday Panda Dial Watches

If you want a panda you can wear every day, start here. These three watches prove you can get exceptional quality without breaking the bank.

1. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore “Panda”

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore chronograph with white dial and grey subdials beside close-up of its black rubber strap with AP-engraved buckle on dark green velvet

The AP Royal Oak Offshore “Panda” is the sport version of the Royal Oak, made for daily wear rather than sitting in a safe. You get the same Gerald Genta design and hand-finishing AP is known for, but in a much tougher build.

The white dial with dark counters gives you the classic panda look on a watch that takes daily knocks the dressier Royal Oak Chronograph cannot.

2. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore “Navy Panda”

The AP Royal Oak Offshore “Navy Panda” takes the same everyday Offshore and gives it a calmer, dressier face. The navy tones soften the usual hard panda contrast, so it works with a suit as easily as off duty. It suits someone who wants Offshore toughness with a quieter look, and it is rarer than the black-subdial version, which makes it harder to find.

3. Tudor Black Bay Chrono “Panda”

Tudor Black Bay Chrono with white dial and black subdials beside close-up of its steel bracelet clasp on dark green velvet

The Tudor Black Bay Chrono “Panda” is the watch here you can wear without a second thought. It is the toughest of the three, with screw-down pushers that let it take knocks the two Audemars Piguet options cannot. It is a bi-compax panda, so two subdials instead of three, and that cleaner layout is easier to read at a glance.

See our Tudor Black Bay buying guide for how the Chrono fits the wider range.

3 Best Panda Dial Watches Worth the Premium

These are the icons, the pandas people recognize on sight and hold onto for years. They keep their value better than anything below them, and each is a watch we would happily own.

1. Rolex Daytona “Panda”

Rolex Daytona chronograph with white panda dial and black subdials beside close-up of its Oyster bracelet with Rolex crown clasp on dark green velvet

The Rolex Daytona “Panda” is the panda every other watch gets measured against. Launched in 2016, it was the first steel Daytona with a ceramic bezel and set the modern panda look.

Rolex discontinued it in 2023, which only made clean examples more wanted. It holds its value better than almost any steel sports watch, and it trades at a steep premium.

Our Rolex Daytona buying guide covers the references worth chasing.

2. Omega Speedmaster Reverse Panda

Omega Speedmaster Professional chronograph with black dial and white subdials beside close-up of its steel bracelet with Omega logo clasp on dark green velvet

The Omega Speedmaster Reverse Panda is the everyday icon of the group, the one we hand most buyers who want history they can wear hard. This is the watch worn on the Moon, now with a black dial and white subdials that flip the usual panda formula.

You get that history for far less than a Daytona. It is the most affordable watch in this list, but its place on the Moon makes it a true grail. You may still have to wait for one.

3. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph with black tapisserie dial and white subdials beside close-up of its steel bracelet with AP-engraved clasp on dark green velvet

The AP Royal Oak Chronograph is the most finely made reverse panda you can buy. The integrated bracelet and the hand-finished Genta case are more refined than anything else here.

It is the statement pick, priced like one. The steel version trades in the high forties, and the ceramic model we sometimes stock climbs well past that. Buy it because you want it.

Our Royal Oak buying guide maps out where the Chronograph sits in the family.

What Was the First Panda Dial Watch?

Panda dial watch history timeline: 1957 Breitling Top Time reverse panda, 1963 Rolex Daytona, and 2017 Paul Newman auction record

The first panda-style dial belongs to Breitling. Breitling put white subdials on a dark dial with the Superocean chronograph in 1957, which is a reverse panda in today’s terms.

Rolex is the brand that made the look famous. The Cosmograph Daytona arrived in 1963, and its white dial with black subdials became the model everyone else copied. We break down how the Daytona’s dials evolved from the exotic references to today’s ceramic panda.

Then came Paul Newman. He wore his exotic dial 6239 for years, and when his own watch sold at Phillips in 2017 for $17.8 million, the panda Daytona became the most sought-after chronograph dial around.

Breitling did it first, Rolex made it famous, and Paul Newman made it collectible.

Panda vs Reverse Panda: Which One to Buy

Rolex Daytona white panda dial labeled higher resale beside Rolex Daytona black reverse panda dial labeled better value

If resale matters most, buy the white panda; if you want the same watch for thousands less, buy the reverse panda. On the steel Daytona, that choice is about money.

The white panda trades $4,000 to $6,000 above the black reverse panda across the current steel references, a gap of roughly 10 to 15 percent for what is mechanically the identical watch. You pay for the Paul Newman association and the cleaner contrast.

The reverse panda is the value buy. It has the same movement, same case, same build, and a black dial that hides fingerprints and small marks far better than a white one. Buyers who care more about wearing the watch than flipping it tend to land here.

Some of the collectors we deal with swear the white panda reads faster in daylight. Others find the reverse panda easier on the eyes, and a few have swapped their white panda for a reverse one for that reason. Try both before you decide.

What You Pay Extra for a Panda Dial

Every list will tell you panda dials “hold value.” Almost none of them put a number on it. The white-versus-reverse gap covered above is the biggest premium.

Here is what the rest of the extra cost adds up to on the pieces we handle.

What You’re Paying ForThe Real Cost
A full set (box and papers) vs watch only10 to 15 percent higher
Omega’s 2026 reverse-panda Speedmaster vs the standard Moonwatchroughly $1,300 to $1,400 more at retail
A service-replaced dial on a vintage Daytonaknocks 30 to 40 percent off the value

The panda look is its own price tier, so know what you are paying for before you chase the white dial. An original dial and a complete set matter more than most buyers expect. On a vintage piece especially, a swapped dial can wreck the value of a watch that looks clean at a glance.

Rolex also raised steel retail prices about 5.6 percent in January 2026, which pushes the whole panda market up with it. If you are patient, secondhand prices have come down from their peak, and waiting a few months can save you real money.

How to Spot a Fake Panda Dial

On modern watches, the Daytona 116500LN super-fakes have gotten good enough that a quick look no longer catches them. On vintage, the Paul Newman dial is the most forged dial in collecting. Our guide to spotting a fake Daytona walks through the tells that still give them away.

Here are the checks we run on every panda before it leaves our hands:

  • Ceramic bezel: On a real Daytona, the color is smooth and even, with no blotchy patches.
  • Pushers and crown: These should feel crisp and screw down cleanly.
  • Rehaut engraving: The ring of text inside the crystal should be deep and even.
  • Movement: On a genuine 4130 or 4131 (the real Daytona movements), the sound and the sweep are smooth in a way the modified 7750 inside a fake never is.

On vintage, the bigger risk is a redial or a service-swapped dial rather than an outright fake. A dial that has been reprinted or replaced can look clean and still wreck the value. If a seller cannot speak to the dial’s originality, treat that as a reason to slow down.

Where to Buy a Panda Dial Watch

Panda dials are exactly where fakes, redials, and high prices show up most, so this is a category where buying from the right seller matters.

At Majestix Collection, every panda we sell is inspected in person, and we send tour videos and honest condition notes before you commit, so you see the dial, the bezel, and the pushers up close instead of trusting a stock photo.

If you want to compare a white panda against a reverse panda on the wrist, or weigh the Daytona against the Speedmaster and the Offshore, we can line up what we have and talk it through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do panda dial watches have to be chronographs?

A panda dial does not have to be a chronograph. The panda look is about contrast between the main dial and the subdials. Some watches wear white-and-black subdials for a day, date, or running seconds display without a chronograph at all. Most pandas are chronographs because that is where subdials naturally live, but it is not a rule.

Is a two-register or three-register panda better?

It comes down to wrist size and how busy you like a dial. A two-register (bi-compax) panda like the Tudor Black Bay Chrono reads cleaner and suits smaller wrists. A three-register (tri-compax) layout like the Daytona looks more classic and fills the dial. Pick three subdials for the traditional racing look, or two for a calmer, easier read.

Are panda dial watches a good investment?

The white panda Daytona has one of the best track records around, but treats most pandas as watches to wear. The steel Daytona has climbed in value for years and holds it better than other colors. Still, prices dropped 30 to 50 percent in the 2022 correction, so the downside is real. Buy one you would be happy to keep.

What is the cheapest panda dial watch worth owning?

The Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono, around $2,300, is the best entry panda you can buy. You get a Swiss automatic chronograph, a proper vintage-style panda dial, and 100m of water resistance for far less than the luxury picks. Below that price you are mostly looking at quartz or homage, so the Hamilton is where a real mechanical panda starts.

Final Thoughts on the Best Panda Dial Watches

The best panda dial watches split into two groups. The grails, led by the Daytona 116500LN, are worth the premium for their value and history. The Royal Oak Offshore and Tudor Black Bay Chrono are the everyday picks you can wear without worrying about scratches. And usually, the reverse panda is better value than the white.

A white panda shows dust and fine scratches more than a dark dial, so hold out for a clean example. Always check the lug-to-lug measurement, because these watches wear larger on the wrist than the millimeter number suggests.

Message us when you are ready with your shortlist. We will tell you honestly which panda is the right buy for you.
