omega globemaster vs rolex datejust

If you’re looking at luxury dress watches, the Omega Globemaster and the Rolex Datejust are names that keep coming up. Both have fluted bezels, a date window, and a classic look.

There’s a new wrinkle in 2026, though. Omega pulled the Globemaster from its catalog this year, which means one of these two watches is now a closed-supply purchase and the other is still sitting in boutiques.

That single change rewrites most of the advice you’ll find on this comparison. Which movement is more capable, which case fits your wrist, and which one makes sense to buy now are all different questions than they were twelve months ago.

Here’s the full breakdown, updated for where both watches actually stand today.

The Globemaster Was Discontinued in 2026

Omega discontinued the Globemaster in 2026 and replaced it with the Constellation Observatory collection, announced on March 26, 2026. Both the three-hand and the Annual Calendar versions are gone from the catalog.

Omega didn’t make an announcement about it. The references quietly stopped appearing on the site, and the Observatory catalog page went live in their place.

For buyers, three things follow. New-old-stock Globemasters are still out there at dealers and on marketplaces, but that supply is finite. Condition and completeness now carry more weight than they did. And the “should I buy new or pre-owned” question mostly answers itself.

The Datejust, meanwhile, went the other direction. Rolex expanded it at Watches and Wonders 2026 as part of the Oyster case centennial, adding green ombré lacquer dials in both 36mm and 41mm.

What the Omega Globemaster Actually Is

Infographic listing Omega Globemaster highlights, including METAS Master Chronometer certification, Caliber 8900 movement, and 60-hour power reserve.

The Globemaster is a high-precision dress watch from Omega’s Constellation family, launched in 2015. It was the first watch in the world to earn METAS Master Chronometer certification, a Swiss federal testing standard that checks accuracy, magnetic resistance, and performance after exposure to a 15,000 gauss field.

It runs Omega’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement. The co-axial escapement spreads the impulse across three wheels instead of two sliding surfaces, which cuts friction and stretches the gap between services.

The pie-pan dial is the collector draw, and the observatory medallion on the caseback ties it back to Omega’s chronometry record. Water resistance is 100m, which covers swimming and rain but not diving. If you’re mapping the references before committing, our full Globemaster buying guide walks through the lineup.

What the Rolex Datejust Actually Is

Infographic of Rolex Datejust features, highlighting the Caliber 3235 movement, 70-hour power reserve, and Jubilee or Oyster bracelet options.

The Datejust arrived in 1945 for Rolex’s 40th anniversary. It was the first wristwatch with an automatically jumping date, and the Cyclops lens added in the early 1950s became one of the most recognized details in watchmaking.

The main sizes are 36mm and 41mm, with a 31mm version also in the catalog. Bezels run smooth, fluted in white or yellow gold, or diamond-set, and buyers pick between the Jubilee and Oyster bracelets.

Current models use the Caliber 3235, introduced in 2016, with a 70-hour power reserve. Its Chronergy escapement is a reworked lever escapement with a skeletonised pallet fork, which improves efficiency by around 15% over the previous generation.

Collectors value the Datejust for recognizability and resale liquidity. Certain dials, particularly Wimbledon, blue sunburst, and the mint green fluted motif, carry real premiums over the standard configurations. Our Datejust buying guide covers the family reference by reference.

Omega Globemaster vs Rolex Datejust: Most Notable Differences

These are the seven differences that actually change how the two watches wear and how they hold up. Brand reputation aside, this is where the decision gets made.

1. Movement Certification and Anti-Magnetic Performance

Technical comparison infographic between Omega Globemaster and Rolex Datejust, highlighting Caliber 8900/8901 and 15,000 Gauss magnetic resistance for Omega versus Caliber 3235 and Parachrom hairspring for Rolex.

The Globemaster uses Caliber 8900/8901. It carries COSC chronometer certification, then goes through METAS Master Chronometer testing on top of that, verified by an independent Swiss federal body and rated to 15,000 gauss.

The Datejust 41 uses Caliber 3235. It is also COSC-certified first, then tested again to Rolex’s stricter in-house Superlative Chronometer standard of -2/+2 seconds per day. Its Parachrom hairspring is a niobium-zirconium alloy that resists magnetism, though Rolex doesn’t publish a gauss rating for it.

Both watches start from the same independent baseline. The difference is where the second layer of testing happens and how much of it is published.

2. Power Reserve

The Globemaster 39mm offers 60 hours. Take it off Friday evening and it’s still running Monday morning, which is the test most people actually care about.

The Datejust 41 provides 70 hours. That extra ten hours is the difference between a watch that survives a long weekend and one that survives a long weekend plus a lie-in. If you rotate between three or four watches, it’s the more forgiving of the two.

3. Case Size and Wrist Fit

The Globemaster 39mm has a 46.7mm lug-to-lug and 12.6mm thickness. It’s compact and slightly vintage in proportion, which suits smaller wrists.

The Datejust 41 measures 41mm with a 47.5mm lug-to-lug and 12mm thickness. Wider but thinner, so it reads bigger on the wrist while sitting flatter under a cuff.

4. Bezel Material and Scratch Resistance

The Globemaster uses a tungsten carbide bezel on its steel references. It holds its finish far better than steel or gold over years of daily wear.

The Datejust 41 uses white, yellow, or rose gold fluted bezels. Gold picks up micro-scratches, and plenty of owners consider that patina part of the appeal rather than a flaw.

5. Display and Closed Caseback

The Globemaster has a sapphire caseback over the movement, with the observatory medallion set into it.

The Datejust 41 uses a solid caseback. Nothing to see, which is the point. Rolex has never shown a movement through the back on a production Oyster.

6. Dial Layout

The Globemaster puts the date at 6 o’clock on a stepped pie-pan dial. Symmetrical, and quieter to look at.

The Datejust 41 puts the date at 3 o’clock under the Cyclops, which makes it legible at arm’s length. The flat dial also supports a much wider range of colors, textures, and marker styles.

7. Lug Width and Bracelet

The Globemaster has 20mm lugs, so leather, rubber, and NATO straps are easy to source.

The Datejust 41 has 21mm lugs built around the Oyster and Jubilee bracelets. Aftermarket options exist but are limited, and most owners stay on the factory bracelet. If you’re torn between the two, we cover Jubilee vs Oyster in detail separately.

How the Constellation Observatory Changes the Comparison

Omega’s replacement is not a like-for-like swap, and that matters if you were waiting for a new Globemaster.

The Constellation Observatory launched with nine references. The case is 39.4mm in O-MEGASTEEL, Omega’s proprietary alloy rated around 40% harder than the 316L steel used on the Globemaster. The movements are the new Calibre 8914 for steel and Calibre 8915 for precious metals, both METAS-certified with a 60-hour reserve across two barrels.

The headline is that it’s the first two-hand watch to earn Master Chronometer certification. That’s a real technical first, and it’s also the catch.

Eight of the nine references have no date and no seconds hand. Most come on leather rather than a bracelet. So the watch that replaced Omega’s Datejust rival stopped competing with the Datejust on the two things a Datejust buyer usually wants.

Pricing moved too. Steel Observatory models start at $10,900, with the black-dial Calibre 8914 date version at $12,200, and the precious metal references run $37,900 to $59,100. The steel entry point sits roughly $2,400 above where the steel Globemaster started.

The practical read: if you wanted an Omega with a fluted bezel, a date, and a bracelet at Datejust money, the Globemaster is now the only way to get it, and it’s a pre-owned purchase. The standard Constellation is the other option worth weighing, and we’ve done that Constellation vs Datejust breakdown in full.

Price and Market Demand

Price comparison chart showing retail values for Omega Globemaster (Steel and Annual Calendar) versus Rolex Datejust (Steel and Fluted).

Retail figures only tell you half the story here. The secondary market is where the two watches separate.

Rolex Datejust. The steel ref. 126300 has settled into the $9,000 to $10,000 band on the secondary market, up 9.4% over the trailing year according to WatchCharts data. It sells in a median of 26 days, faster than roughly 72% of watches tracked.

The fluted ref. 126334 is the outlier. Against a $11,650 US retail price, its estimated market value sits near $14,400, about 22% above retail. Wimbledon and other in-demand dials push the range to $19,500.

Worth noting: the 126300’s five-year appreciation of 12.1% actually lags the broader Datejust collection average of 20.8%. The smooth-bezel steel model is the liquid one, not the appreciating one.

Omega Globemaster. Unworn steel examples list around $8,500 on Chrono24, roughly in line with the old retail price. Pre-owned full sets appear from about $5,000, and Annual Calendar examples sit in the $9,700 to $10,200 range.

The precious metal references tell a more interesting story post-discontinuation. The Sedna gold-bezel ref. 130.23.39.21.03.001 rose 19.2% over the past year, outpacing the WatchCharts Omega Index by 12.2%. The Sedna and blue ref. 130.20.39.21.03.001 is up 15.1% over five years.

That’s a small sample on a low-volume watch, so treat it as a signal rather than a trend. But the direction is the opposite of what this comparison would have said in 2024.

What drives price on each. The Datejust responds to configuration above all: bezel, bracelet, and dial. A Wimbledon or fluted-motif dial can add 30% or more over a plain sunburst on the same reference. Full sets add roughly 5% to 15%.

The Globemaster has a narrower spread. Steel 39mm remains the most traded, and with the catalog closed, completeness and condition now carry more of the pricing weight than dial choice does.

Wider context: the secondary market posted its fifth consecutive quarter of growth in Q1 2026, up 1.9%, so neither of these is being priced in a falling market. For the pattern across both brands rather than these two models, see how Omega and Rolex compare on resale.

How Buying a Discontinued Globemaster Works

Buying a watch Omega no longer makes a few practical things. None of them are dealbreakers, but they’re worth knowing before you commit.

Warranty. An unworn Globemaster bought from a dealer today may still carry time on its original Omega warranty, or it may not, depending on when the card was activated. Ask for the card date before you agree on price rather than after, and know what a watch warranty actually covers before you rely on it.

Servicing. Omega services discontinued references, and the Caliber 8900 family remains in production across the Seamaster and Constellation lines, so parts availability is not a concern the way it would be for a 1970s reference. Budget for it, though, because what an Omega service costs surprises people.

Supply. Once new-old-stock clears, every Globemaster on the market is a used watch. That’s when condition grading, bracelet stretch, and box-and-papers completeness start driving price more than they do today. Worth learning how condition grading works before that point.

Negotiation. Discontinued doesn’t automatically mean appreciating. The steel three-hand references still trade below their old retail, and a seller quoting a discontinuation premium on a common steel model is asking you to pay for scarcity that hasn’t arrived yet.

Notable Omega Globemaster References

Five Omega Globemaster watches in various styles including blue, white, and black dials with leather and steel straps on a green silk background.

Each reference in the lineup takes a different angle on the same watch. Here’s how they differ in practice.

1. Ref. 130.30.39.21.03.001

The one most often cross-shopped against a blue-dial Datejust. The dial shifts tone under different light, which photos rarely capture. The fully brushed case makes it feel more tool-like than a Datejust on the wrist.

Key Specs

  • Case size: 39mm
  • Lug-to-lug: 46.7mm
  • Thickness: 12.6mm
  • Material: Stainless steel (316L)
  • Bezel: Tungsten carbide, fluted
  • Movement: Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 8900
  • Power reserve: 60 hours
  • Water resistance: 100m

2. Ref. 130.30.39.21.02.001

The quiet one. Indoors the dial goes almost matte, and it disappears under a shirt cuff. This reference attracts long-term owners rather than flippers, which is part of why clean examples are harder to find than the blue.

Key Specs

  • Case size: 39mm
  • Lug-to-lug: 46.7mm
  • Thickness: 12.6mm
  • Material: Stainless steel
  • Bezel: Tungsten carbide, fluted
  • Movement: Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 8900
  • Power reserve: 60 hours
  • Water resistance: 100m

3. Ref. 130.33.39.21.03.001

The yellow gold bezel changes the watch’s whole register, moving it from steel dress-sport toward traditional dress. It gets worn for occasions more than for Tuesdays.

Condition carries more weight in resale here, since gold surfaces show wear sooner than the tungsten carbide bezels do.

Key Specs

  • Case size: 39mm
  • Material: Stainless steel and 18K yellow gold
  • Bezel: 18K yellow gold, fluted
  • Movement: Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 8900/8901
  • Power reserve: 60 hours
  • Water resistance: 100m

4. Ref. 130.33.41.22.10.001

The most complicated Globemaster. The central month indicator is the detail people notice on the second or third look rather than the first.

At 41mm and 14.6mm thick it wears substantially larger than the 39mm models. This one went out of the catalog alongside the rest of the line in 2026.

Key Specs

  • Case size: 41mm
  • Lug-to-lug: 50.1mm
  • Thickness: 14.6mm
  • Material: Stainless steel and Sedna gold
  • Movement: Co-Axial Master Chronometer Annual Calendar Caliber 8922
  • Power reserve: 55 hours
  • Water resistance: 100m

5. Ref. 130.53.39.21.02.001

Looks close to the steel models until you pick it up. I’ve handed this one across the counter to people who assumed it was the steel version, and the reaction is always the same double-take when the weight lands.

It trades infrequently and listings are thin, so pricing depends more on condition and completeness than on any consistent demand pattern.

Key Specs

  • Case size: 39mm
  • Material: Platinum
  • Bezel: White gold, fluted
  • Movement: Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 8913
  • Power reserve: 60 hours
  • Water resistance: 100m

Notable Rolex Datejust References

nfographic of Rolex Datejust features, highlighting the Caliber 3235 movement, 70-hour power reserve, and Jubilee or Oyster bracelet options.

Size, bezel, and bracelet are what separate these. Here’s how each one actually behaves.

1. Rolex Datejust Ref. 126300

The easiest Datejust to wear casually. Without the fluted bezel it reads closer to a luxury sports watch, and it works with jeans as readily as with a jacket.

Key Specs

  • Case size: 41mm
  • Lug-to-lug: approx. 47.5mm
  • Thickness: approx. 12mm
  • Material: Oystersteel
  • Bezel: Smooth, steel
  • Movement: Caliber 3235, Superlative Chronometer
  • Power reserve: 70 hours
  • Water resistance: 100m

2. Rolex Datejust Ref. 126334

The classic Datejust silhouette. The white gold fluted bezel throws light constantly, which is why it reads more expensive than the 126300 across a room.

It also has the broadest dial selection, including the Wimbledon and, new for 2026, the green ombré lacquer dial. That variety is a big part of why it’s the most-traded modern reference. If the Wimbledon is what you’re after, we compare the Wimbledon in 36 vs 41 separately.

Key Specs

  • Case size: 41mm
  • Lug-to-lug: approx. 47.5mm
  • Thickness: approx. 12mm
  • Material: Oystersteel with 18K white gold bezel
  • Bezel: White gold, fluted
  • Movement: Caliber 3235, Superlative Chronometer
  • Power reserve: 70 hours
  • Water resistance: 100m

3. Rolex Datejust Ref. 126333

The most visible of the steel-based Datejusts. Yellow gold warms the whole watch and it gets noticed from a distance, which makes it a social-occasion piece more than a desk-diver.

Key Specs

  • Case size: 41mm
  • Material: Oystersteel and 18K yellow gold
  • Bezel: Yellow gold, fluted
  • Movement: Caliber 3235
  • Power reserve: 70 hours
  • Water resistance: 100m

The most traditional Datejust in the current catalog. At 36mm it sits closer to vintage Rolex proportions and slips under a cuff without effort. The 2026 green ombré dial is also offered here.

  • Lug-to-lug: approx. 45.5mm
  • Material: Oystersteel

  • Movement: Caliber 3235
  • Power reserve: 70 hours
  • Water resistance: 100m

5. Rolex Datejust Ref. 126234

Classic proportions with the fluted bezel, which is the configuration most people picture when they hear “Datejust.” Formal enough for a wedding, subtle enough for a Wednesday.

Key Specs

  • Case size: 36mm
  • Material: Oystersteel with 18K white gold bezel
  • Bezel: White gold, fluted
  • Movement: Caliber 3235
  • Power reserve: 70 hours

Who Each Watch Is Actually For

The two offer genuinely different ownership experiences. One is engineering-led and now supply-limited. The other is heritage-led and available at any authorized dealer with a waitlist.

Choose the Omega Globemaster if:

  • You want independently verified accuracy, with METAS testing layered on top of COSC
  • Magnetic resistance to 15,000 gauss is useful to you
  • You want to see the movement through the caseback
  • A tungsten carbide bezel that stays sharp appeals more than gold that patinas
  • A 39mm case with 46.7mm lug-to-lug fits your wrist better
  • You want to swap straps easily on 20mm lugs
  • You’re comfortable buying from a closed catalog, and comfortable that steel examples still trade below their old retail

Choose the Rolex Datejust if:

  • Resale liquidity and a fast, deep market matter to you
  • You want the 70-hour reserve
  • The 41mm presence and Cyclops magnifier suit you, or you want the 36mm option
  • Universal recognition is part of the appeal

Omega Globemaster vs Rolex Datejust FAQ

Is the Globemaster a good investment now that it’s discontinued?

The precious metal references have moved up, but the steel three-hand models still trade at or below their old retail. Buy it because you want to wear it.

Will either watch fit a 6.5-inch wrist?

Both will, but the 36mm Datejust is the safest bet at that size. Under about 6.25 inches, the 41mm Datejust starts to overhang, while the Globemaster’s shorter lug-to-lug keeps it manageable. We’ve rounded up luxury watches that suit smaller wrists if you want more options.

Can you put a Datejust on a leather strap?

Yes, with 21mm-to-20mm end links or a fitted strap. Worth knowing that the factory bracelet carries a real share of the watch’s resale value, so keep it in the box rather than selling it on.

Does a tungsten carbide bezel ever chip?

It can. Tungsten carbide resists scratches far better than steel, but it’s harder and more brittle, so a sharp knock against a door frame can chip an edge. A chip means bezel replacement, not polishing.

Is a two-tone Datejust harder to resell than steel?

It’s a slower sale but not a worse one. Two-tone tracks the gold price, and with Rolex’s 2026 increases weighted heavily toward gold models, the gap between two-tone and steel resale has narrowed. We break down whether Rolex models hold their value across the catalog.

Where to Buy Authentic Watches Online

Where you source a pre-owned watch matters as much as which one you pick. There are a handful of solid channels for either of these watches. Chrono24 has the deepest listing pool and an escrow service that holds your payment until the watch arrives, though it’s worth knowing what to check on Chrono24 first.

eBay covers both under its Authenticity Guarantee program, which routes the watch through a third-party inspection first. Grailzee runs auction-format sales, which sometimes surfaces better pricing on slower-moving references like the platinum Globemaster.

Watch forums are also worth watching for private sales, though you take on the verification yourself.

Let Us Source It For You

Source a Watch

We sell, buy, and trade luxury watches too. What clients tend to come to us for is the conversation before the purchase: tour videos of the actual watch instead of stock photos, and honest condition notes that include the marks we’d rather not photograph.

That’s reflected in our 4.9-star Google rating, which mostly comes from people who wanted to know exactly what they were buying before they wired money.

If you’re weighing a Globemaster against a Datejust and want to see specific examples of both, see what’s available and reach out, and we’ll send you tour videos and condition notes on what we have, so you can compare them properly instead of guessing from listing photos.

Final Thoughts on Omega Globemaster vs Rolex Datejust

The question isn’t which is better. It’s which kind of ownership you’re signing up for, and 2026 sharpened that difference.

The Globemaster is a closed chapter now, with fixed supply and a certification story Omega built deliberately. The Datejust keeps going, expanded again this year, backed by the deepest secondary market in watches.

Two things worth doing before you buy. Try the 36mm Datejust before assuming you want the 41, because a lot of people who like the Globemaster’s proportions end up preferring it. Our 36 vs 41 comparison covers the trade-off. And see both dials under warm indoor light, where a pie-pan and a sunburst behave nothing alike.
