The Hublot vs Rolex debate is one of the most common in luxury watches. Both are top Swiss brands, but they build their watches in almost opposite ways. Hublot goes for bold cases and modern materials. Rolex sticks with proven engineering and a classic look.
Both brands are respected, and both make great watches. The real question is which one fits the way you want to wear it.
This guide covers the movements, materials, case build, and water resistance of each watch. We also look at how they wear day to day and how their prices and resale value compare.
Hublot Overview
Hublot is young by watch standards, founded in 1980 by Carlo Crocco. The name is French for “porthole,” which suits its round bezel. Its first watch paired a gold case with a rubber strap, which was rare for a luxury watch back then.
The brand struggled early on until Jean-Claude Biver took over in 2004 and launched the Big Bang in 2005. The bold, layered case sold well and made Hublot far more popular. Luxury group LVMH bought the company in 2008.
Hublot’s whole approach is based on what it calls the Art of Fusion. The idea is to blend classic watchmaking with unusual modern materials. Trying new materials before other brands is a big part of what Hublot is known for.
Hublot suits buyers who want a large, modern watch that stands out. The style is bold, and not everyone likes it. Some enjoy the loud, industrial look, while others find it too flashy. If you want something subtle, this is not the brand for you. For a fuller look at the range and where each line sits, our Hublot buying guide covers it in more detail.

Rolex Overview
Rolex was founded in London in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis. Wilsdorf chose the name because it was short and easy to say in any language. The brand focused early on precision and waterproofing.
It created the Oyster in 1926, the first waterproof watch case, and added the self-winding Perpetual rotor in 1931. That rotor design is still used in most automatic watches today.
Rolex is privately owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, so it has no public shareholders. It makes almost everything in-house, including its own gold.
Rolex suits buyers who want a proven, do-everything watch with classic looks. Its designs change very little from year to year, so some people find them predictable. Popular steel models are also hard to get at retail, with long waitlists at dealers. If you want to map the whole range first, our Rolex buying guide breaks the lineup down model by model.

Hublot vs Rolex: Most Notable Differences

This is where the two brands split the most. We focus on the build details that change how each watch works and feels on the wrist. These are the points to weigh when you choose.
1. Movement
Hublot uses its in-house Unico movement in the Big Bang Unico line. It is an automatic flyback chronograph, and you can see it working through the open dial. Other base Big Bang and Classic Fusion models use modified Sellita or ETA movements instead of fully in-house ones. So the movement inside a Hublot depends on the exact model you pick.
Rolex makes every movement in-house, and all of them carry Superlative Chronometer certification, rated to about -2/+2 seconds per day. The same standard applies to every model, from the entry-level Oyster Perpetual to the Daytona. If you want the same movement quality in every model, Rolex gives you that. Our breakdown of how Rolex movements are built and rated goes deeper on the calibers.
2. Materials
Hublot builds cases from titanium, colored high-tech ceramic, carbon, King Gold, and its own scratch-resistant Magic Gold, plus solid sapphire crystal on some models. These materials create unusual looks, and in titanium or ceramic they keep a large watch fairly light. Sapphire and gold pieces cost more, and sapphire cases are more fragile.
Rolex uses Oystersteel, its name for 904L steel, along with gold, platinum, and Cerachrom ceramic on many bezels. The focus is on durability and a finish that holds up over the years. This suits buyers who want proven, hard-wearing metals over exotic ones.
3. Size
Hublot builds thick, multi-layer cases with exposed screws on the bezel. Its watches run large, often 42mm to 45mm and about 14.5mm thick. They sit tall on the wrist and look bold, so they work best on medium to larger wrists.
Rolex keeps things slimmer. Its sports watches sit around 41mm and about 12mm thick, flat enough to slip under a shirt cuff, and the range runs from about 36mm to 44mm across models. This suits buyers who want a slimmer fit that works in more settings.
4. Bezel
Hublot’s bezel has 6 H-shaped screws and can be ceramic, titanium, or tungsten. The sapphire crystal usually has an anti-reflective coating on the front, and often on the back too. That exposed-screw look is a big part of Hublot’s style.
Rolex dive and GMT models use a Cerachrom ceramic bezel that resists scratches and fading. The sapphire crystal keeps a clean, plain look, and date models add a Cyclops, the small magnifier bubble that sits over the date. The result is a simpler, quieter look.
5. Water Resistance
Most Hublot models are rated to 100 meters, which is fine for everyday water. Full-sapphire models and some more complex ones can drop to around 30 to 50 meters. So a Hublot handles water fine, but it is not built as a true dive watch.
Rolex goes further. Its dive models are rated to 300 meters, a real dive spec, and its other sports watches have their own ratings. The Oyster case and screw-down crown are built for water resistance from the start. This suits buyers who want true dive-level sealing.
6. Bracelet
Hublot puts most models on a rubber strap with a patented One-Click system, so you can swap straps in seconds without tools. The rubber is light and comfortable, which helps on a big case.
Rolex fits a metal Oyster or Jubilee bracelet with an Oysterlock clasp. It also has a Glidelock or Easylink extension, which lets you adjust the fit in small steps without tools. If you’re weighing the two systems, we compare Glidelock and Easylink side by side in a separate guide. That helps as your wrist swells or shrinks through the day. Buyers who want a secure, adjustable metal bracelet get it here.
Price and Market Demand
Both brands overlap on price, but they differ a lot on resale and demand. Here is a quick comparison.
| Factor | Rolex | Hublot |
| Entry retail price | About $6,000 (Oyster Perpetual, Datejust) | About $6,000 (automatic models) |
| Popular models | Submariner from about $9,000 | Big Bang Unico about $14,000 to $18,000 |
| Resale value | Holds about 70% to 90%; top steel models sell above retail | Loses about 40% on average; about 30% to 40% in the first year |
| Brand size (est.) | About CHF 11 billion / $14 billion in 2025, close to a third of the Swiss market | About CHF 670 million in 2023, roughly one-fifteenth of Rolex |
| Yearly production | About 1.15 million watches | Much smaller; owned by the LVMH group |
| Buying it | Popular steel models have waitlists; you may pay a premium | Easy to buy new |
Figures for brand size come from Morgan Stanley’s Swiss watch reports, which are industry estimates because the brands do not publish these numbers.
A Rolex is the safer choice if resale value matters to you. A Hublot makes more sense if you just want to wear and enjoy the watch and are not worried about selling it later. We look at how well Rolex holds its value separately if that side of the decision is what matters most to you.
Keep in mind that exact prices and resale values change often, so use these as a general guide. It’s worth checking the current market before you buy so you know what each watch is worth right now.

1. Big Bang Unico Orange 44mm

The Big Bang Unico is Hublot’s flagship line and its most advanced. The brand’s cheaper models use outside movements, but the Unico is Hublot’s own design. Its open dial lets you watch it run. This is a bright, loud piece made to stand out, and the small run makes it harder to find. If you’re deciding between the Big Bang references, our Big Bang buying guide walks through the lineup.

2. Classic Fusion Chronograph Green 45mm

The Classic Fusion is Hublot’s most wearable line and often a buyer’s first step into the brand. It has the porthole shape that goes back to the original 1980 Hublot, but in a thinner, cleaner case than the Big Bang. If you’re torn between the two lines, we compare the Classic Fusion and the Big Bang directly. The green sunray dial changes shade as the light moves, which keeps a simple design interesting.

3. Spirit of Big Bang Skeleton 42mm

The Spirit of Big Bang took the Big Bang’s bold style and reshaped it when it launched in 2009. The long case curves to follow the wrist, so it wears large but sits closer than you would expect. The skeleton work is the main draw here, and it opens up the dial so the moving parts stay in view.

4. Big Bang Original Black 44mm

The Big Bang Original launched Hublot’s modern era in 2005. It quickly turned a struggling brand into a big name in watches. Its layered case, built from stacked parts rather than one block, set the design that every later Big Bang follows. This version keeps that first look in a dark, low-key finish.

1. Submariner No Date 41mm

The Submariner is the core Rolex dive watch and one of the most recognized watches anywhere. It set the template for the modern dive watch back in 1953, and the design has barely changed since. This no-date version skips the date window and magnifier. That keeps the dial balanced and clean, a look many buyers prefer. We lay out the date versus no-date choice in its own guide if you’re stuck between the two.

2. GMT-Master II “Pepsi” 40mm

The GMT-Master II adds a second time zone and a 24-hour hand for travel. Rolex first built it for Pan Am pilots in 1954, and it has stayed a favorite travel watch ever since. The “Pepsi” color scheme is the original one, and it remains the most requested version in the lineup today.

3. Daytona 40mm Steel

The Daytona is Rolex’s racing chronograph, named after the Florida racetrack when it launched in 1963. It was built for drivers, with a stopwatch function and a bezel scale that reads average speed over a set distance. The steel version is famous for being one of the hardest Rolex models to buy new, with long waitlists at dealers.

4. Datejust 41 White Roman

The Datejust is the classic everyday Rolex and the model that introduced the date window back in 1945. It suits almost any setting, from the office to the weekend. That easy range is a big part of why it has stayed popular for so long. The white dial with Roman numerals gives this one a clean, formal look.

Which Watch Brand Should You Choose?
It depends on what you want, so match the specs to how you plan to wear the watch.
Choose Hublot if:
- You want a large case with strong wrist presence.
- You like exotic materials such as colored ceramic, carbon, or sapphire.
- You want fast, tool-free strap changes with a rubber system.
- You prefer an open dial that shows the movement.
- You want a lighter watch for its size, in titanium or ceramic.
Choose Rolex if:
- You want the same in-house movement standard in every model.
- You need true dive-level water resistance in a sports watch.
- You prefer a slimmer case that fits under a cuff.
- You want a metal bracelet you can adjust in small steps without tools.
- You want proven metals built for long-term durability.
Where to Buy Authentic Hublot and Rolex Watches
You can buy both brands new from an authorized dealer or pre-owned from a trusted seller. Both watches are widely copied, so where you buy matters as much as what you buy.
A dealer gives you the full warranty, but popular Rolex models can be hard to get new. That is why many buyers look to the pre-owned market, where the exact reference you want is often in stock.
Wherever you buy pre-owned, the watch should be checked and backed by the seller. At Majestix Collection, each Hublot and Rolex is inspected for authenticity. The listing shows its exact reference, condition, and price, so you know what you are getting before you buy. Many pieces come as a complete set with the box and papers.
You can also find both brands on marketplaces like Chrono24, eBay, and Grailzee, which list watches from many sellers. If you buy there, check the seller’s reviews, ask for clear photos of the actual watch, and confirm the reference number before you pay.

Final Thoughts on Hublot vs Rolex
The Hublot vs Rolex choice comes down to how each watch is built and how that fits your life. Hublot gives you modern materials, a big case, and quick strap changes. Rolex gives you the same in-house movement in every model, true dive sealing, and a slimmer fit that holds its value better over time.
Hublot’s titanium and ceramic models wear bigger than their size suggests, so try one on before you settle on a case size. If you buy a Rolex pre-owned, make sure it comes with all its spare bracelet links. A past owner may have removed some to fit a smaller wrist, and without those links you cannot size it up later.
At Majestix Collection, we can help you find the exact Hublot or Rolex reference that fits your preference.
