You do not need any tools, and you cannot break the watch by winding it. Tudor built these movements to handle it by hand.

3 Steps to Wind a Tudor Black Bay
Your Black Bay winds itself while you wear it. The motion of your wrist keeps it running, so you only need to wind it by hand when it has stopped or run low.
1. Unscrew the Crown
The Black Bay has a screw-down crown, which keeps water out down to 200m. Turn the crown counter-clockwise until it loosens and pops out to the first position. Stop there. Do not pull it out any further.
That first position is where you wind the watch. On models with a date (the GMT, 41, Pro, and Chrono), the next click out sets the date, and the last one sets the time. The 58 and 54 have no date, so their crown goes straight from winding to time-setting.
2. Wind Clockwise Until It Resists
Hold the crown between your thumb and index finger. Turn it clockwise, away from you. Only this direction winds the watch. Turning it back does nothing.
If the watch was fully stopped, the second hand starts to move after a few turns. Keep going until the crown feels firm and you hear soft clicks from the mainspring. Take your time and do not rush the turns.
3. Screw the Crown Back Down
Push the crown in and turn it clockwise until it sits tight against the case. Do not force it past that point. Do not skip this step either. A crown left unscrewed means no water resistance, and water can get into the case.

How Many Turns to Fully Wind a Black Bay
A Black Bay takes 30 to 40 crown turns to reach a full wind. Tudor’s own care page says to wind it about 30 times. That gets the watch running, but it usually will not fill the mainspring all the way.
If you want the full 70 hours, keep going past 30. You will feel the crown get firmer as you get close.

Turn count changes with the movement inside the watch. The GMT drives an extra hand and a second time zone, so it needs a few more turns than a time-only 58. The numbers below are what we count on our own bench. Find your model, then count full turns of the crown.

One turn means a full circle of the crown. This is why owners argue about the number online. One person counts a full rotation, another counts a quarter, so their totals never match.
Why Tudor Says 30 but Owners Need More
Thirty turns is a safe minimum. It wakes the watch up and gives you enough power to set the time and wear it. But it is not a full wind. Stop at 30 and the watch will run for about 30 to 40 hours. Keep winding to 40 turns, or a few more on the GMT, and it will run close to the full 70.
The last few turns matter most, because that is where the mainspring stores the most power.
Can You Overwind a Tudor Black Bay?
You cannot overwind a Tudor Black Bay. Every Tudor movement has a part called a slipping clutch. When the mainspring is full, the clutch lets go and slides instead of winding any tighter.
So the spring cannot be wound too far, no matter how long you keep turning. You will not break anything by winding your watch.
How to Tell When a Black Bay Is Fully Wound
You can tell a Black Bay is fully wound by the crown and the clicks. Over the last few turns, the crown gets harder to turn, and the clicks get lighter and faster than before. That faster clicking is the clutch slipping, and it is what we listen for. Once you hear it, stop winding.
Why Your Black Bay Dies Before 70 Hours
If your Black Bay stops well before 50 hours after a full wind, the movement most likely needs service. First, make sure you gave it a true full wind. A half-wound watch will always test short, and that is the most common reason owners think something is broken.
If you did wind it fully, check the number. A healthy Black Bay should run for 64 to 68 hours. Some drop-off from the 70-hour figure is normal, so anything in that range is fine.

2 Common Winding Problems on the Black Bay

1. The Black Bay Chrono Winds Stiff
The Black Bay Chrono is much harder to wind than the other Black Bays, and that is normal. Its movement is built on a Breitling base, which has always been stiffer to wind by hand than Tudor’s own movements. You feel the same thing on the Breitling Navitimer, which uses that movement. If your Chrono takes real effort, nothing is wrong.

If the crown stops hard after seven or eight turns and will not go further, something is wrong. That is not the clutch slipping. A healthy Black Bay lets you wind past 30 turns before the clutch kicks in. A hard stop that early means something inside the movement is stuck or broken. Do not force it.
