About this Watch

The Rolex Yacht-Master 16623 is a 40mm two-tone sports watch built in Yellow Rolesor, Rolex’s term for a combination of stainless steel and 18k yellow gold. It is a time and date watch with a rotating 60-minute bezel, positioned as the nautically themed member of Rolex’s professional line rather than a dive tool.

The Yacht-Master line launched in 1992 with the solid 18k yellow gold reference 16628, followed by the steel and platinum Rolesium reference 16622 in 1999. The two-tone Yellow Rolesor version in the full 40mm size arrived later, and the reference 16623 was introduced in 2005. It was the first time the two-tone steel and gold treatment reached the standard men’s 40mm Yacht-Master, the smaller 35mm and 29mm two-tone versions having appeared in the mid-1990s.

Mechanically the reference sits on the Rolex caliber 3135, the same automatic movement family used across the Submariner, Sea-Dweller, and Datejust of the era. Within the range at launch the 16623 was a mid-tier configuration: more decorative than the all-steel sports models, below the solid gold 16628, and alongside the platinum 16622.

The example described here carries serial F646412, an F-series number consistent with a 2005 production year, placing it in the reference’s first year of production.

Dial and Face Design

This reference carries a silver dial with a sunburst finish. The hour markers are applied and luminous, in the standard Yacht-Master layout of round dots at most positions with a baton at the quarters and an inverted triangle at 12, each surrounded by a polished yellow gold frame. The hour and minute hands are the Rolex Mercedes style in yellow gold with luminous inserts, and the watch has a straight yellow gold centre seconds hand.

Rolex Yacht-Master + 16623 - Dial & Face

A date aperture sits at 3 o’clock, magnified by the Cyclops lens on the crystal above it. An outer minute track runs around the edge of the dial. Printed dial text reads ROLEX beneath the coronet at 12, with OYSTER PERPETUAL DATE above the centre. Below the centre the YACHT-MASTER designation is printed in red, above the SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED lines and the SWISS MADE marking at the foot of the dial.

The silver dial is one of several dial colours offered under this reference, and is described by dealers interchangeably as silver, grey, or slate. The marker and hand construction is shared across the colour options.

Case and Bezel

The case is a 40mm Oyster case in stainless steel, in Rolex’s tonneau form with brushed and polished surfaces and downturned lugs. It is water resistant to 100 metres, sealed by a screw-down caseback and a screw-down winding crown. Lug width is 20 mm.

Rolex Yacht-Master + 16623 - Case & Bezel

The crystal is sapphire with a Cyclops date magnifier over the 3 o’clock aperture. The caseback is solid and screw-down.

The bezel is solid 18k yellow gold and rotates bidirectionally. It is a 60-minute graduated time-lapse bezel with raised, high-polished numerals and graduations standing above a matte, sandblasted background. Because it turns in both directions, it is used to mark or read off elapsed time in either direction rather than as a one-way countdown safety bezel of the type fitted to Rolex dive models.

Bracelet and Clasp

This reference is fitted with the Oyster bracelet in two-tone configuration, reference 78763, with yellow gold centre links flanked by stainless steel outer links. The bracelet uses solid end links where it meets the case. Finishing follows the two-tone pattern of polished gold centres and brushed steel outers.

Rolex Yacht-Master + 16623 - Bracelet & Clasp

The clasp is a signed Rolex folding Oysterlock clasp with a safety catch. Individual clasps carry a two-character date code stamped inside (for example CL, MA, or similar), which indicates the clasp’s production period rather than a fixed value for the reference.

The two-tone Oyster bracelet is the bracelet supplied with this reference across its production.

Movement and Functionality

The movement is the Rolex caliber 3135, an automatic (self-winding) chronometer movement with a bidirectional Perpetual rotor. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), carries 31 jewels, and provides a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.

The 3135 is a time and date movement with an instantaneous quickset date, adjusted to five positions and temperature, and certified as a chronometer by the COSC. Regulation is by Rolex’s Microstella system on the balance. Functions are hours, minutes, running seconds, and date.

To operate the watch: unscrew the crown to reach the winding and setting positions. The intermediate position sets the date independently through the quickset function, and the outer position hacks the seconds and sets the time. The bezel is turned by hand to mark elapsed time against the minute hand. After use the crown is pushed in and screwed back down against the case to restore water resistance.

Materials of the Watch

The case, the outer bracelet links, and the crown are stainless steel. The bezel and the bracelet’s centre links are solid 18k yellow gold, giving the watch its Yellow Rolesor two-tone character. The hour marker surrounds and the hands are yellow gold.

The crystal is synthetic sapphire, scratch resistant, with an integrated Cyclops lens over the date. The hour markers and hands carry a luminous compound for low-light reading.

The overall material makeup is a steel sports case paired with solid gold on the bezel and bracelet centres, a durable combination that places the watch between an all-steel tool watch and a precious-metal dress watch.

Box and Papers

A full set for a 2005 example of this reference is expected to include:

  • Outer cardboard sleeve
  • Inner Rolex presentation box (Oyster line)
  • Rolex guarantee card / warranty paper for the reference and serial
  • Yacht-Master booklet and general Rolex Oyster booklet
  • Product swing tags / hang tags
  • Any spare bracelet links removed at sizing

Rolex Yacht-Master + 16623 - Box & Papers

Box Variations

Older version

  • Transitional green Rolex box with a wood-tone interior platform
  • Green marbled outer box
  • Period Yacht-Master documentation
  • Approximately 2005, the outgoing packaging style in which early 2005 full sets are commonly found

Newer Version

  • Green wave-textured Rolex presentation box with a cream interior
  • Cream outer box with a protective sleeve
  • Approximately 2006 to 2016, appearing consistently on later 16623 sets from 2007 through 2015

The box style changed during the reference’s production run. A 2005 example falls in the earlier transitional style with the wood-tone interior platform and green marbled outer box, while examples from 2007 onward are found in the green wave-textured box with the cream interior and outer.

For a full-set listing, the era-correct box completes the set. A watch of this era returned in a later-style or service box is common on the pre-owned market, and a replacement box does not carry the same weight as the original for a full set.

Original Warranty

A 16623 sold in 2005 shipped with Rolex’s standard international guarantee of the period, which was a two-year warranty. The guarantee was recorded on a paper Rolex Guarantee or Chronometer Certificate, completed by the authorised retailer, and early examples may carry the paper certificate together with the green leather document holder. Rolex used this paper guarantee format in the earlier part of the reference’s run before moving to a green-and-white plastic International Guarantee card around 2006 to 2007.

Warranty Variations

Older version

  • Paper Rolex Guarantee or Chronometer Certificate, completed by the authorised retailer
  • Early examples may have the paper certificate together with the green leather document holder
  • Two-year international guarantee applicable to a 2005 sale
  • Approximately 2005 to 2006/2007

Newer version

  • Green-and-white plastic International Guarantee card with gold side panels and a magnetic stripe
  • Documented on a 2007 example and on later 2013 to 2015 sets
  • Approximately 2006/2007 to 2016

The warranty paper format changed during the reference’s run, from the paper Rolex Guarantee or Chronometer Certificate on earlier examples to the green-and-white plastic International Guarantee card on examples from around 2006 to 2007 onward. A 2005 example falls in the earlier paper format, and its accompanying green leather document holder is part of the era-correct set.

The original two-year factory guarantee on any 2005 example has long since expired. On the current market the certificate or card matters as dated proof of original sale rather than as active coverage, and a retailer-completed, dated original is the primary paper for authenticating a full set. A blank or photocopied guarantee is a warning sign.

Production and Discontinuation Status

  • Currently in production: No
  • Year introduced: 2005
  • Year discontinued: approximately 2016
  • Approximate production run: around a decade

The reference 16623 ran as a five-digit reference throughout its life and was discontinued around 2016, after which Rolex did not continue a yellow steel-and-gold Yacht-Master in this five-digit form.

On-Wrist Feel

The 40mm Oyster case wears close to its stated size, and the Yacht-Master’s downturned lugs and lower profile make it sit flatter and more comfortably than a Submariner of the same diameter. The 100 metre water resistance allows a thinner case than the 300 metre dive models, which is part of why it wears flatter.

Rolex Yacht-Master + 16623 - On the wrist feel

Case thickness measures around 12 mm and lug-to-lug is around 47.5 mm on dealer measurements, so the watch suits medium to larger wrists without significant overhang on most. The two-tone Oyster bracelet on solid end links adds weight and a substantial feel.

This is a watch aimed at a wearer who wants a sports Rolex with a dressier, precious-metal presence, suitable for daily wear and for occasions where an all-steel tool watch would read as too plain.

Variations

Across every example the constants are the Yellow Rolesor construction (stainless steel case and outer bracelet links with solid 18k yellow gold bezel and bracelet centre links), the 40mm Oyster case, the bidirectional 18k gold 60-minute bezel, the caliber 3135, and the two-tone Oyster bracelet reference 78763. What varies is the dial.

Dials

  • Silver / grey / slate (described interchangeably by dealers; the red YACHT-MASTER line of text appears on this dial)
  • White
  • Blue (sunburst)
  • Champagne
  • White mother-of-pearl
  • Tahitian (grey) mother-of-pearl
  • Mother-of-pearl Serti (mother-of-pearl with diamond and sapphire hour markers)

Hour markers

  • Standard configuration: applied luminous round, baton, and triangular markers with polished yellow gold surrounds
  • Some white-dial examples were fitted with black onyx hardstone hour markers in place of the standard luminous markers
