The Rolex Day-Date is the brand’s flagship dress model, first shown in 1956 as the first wristwatch to display the date and the day of the week spelled out in full. Reference 18038 is the yellow gold, fluted bezel version of the fourth generation, introduced in 1977 as the successor to reference 1803. It is built entirely in 18 ct yellow gold and runs on the President bracelet.

The 18038 marked several changes over the 1803 it replaced. It was the first Day-Date generation fitted with a sapphire crystal in place of acrylic, moved from the earlier “pie-pan” dial to a flat dial, and adopted a Twinlock screw-down crown that raised water resistance to 100 metres. Inside, the new caliber 3055 introduced a quickset date function.

Within the reference number, the “3” denotes the fluted bezel and the “8” denotes yellow gold. The reference sat at the top of the Rolex catalogue throughout its run as a regular-production model, offered across a wide range of dials. It was produced until 1988, when the double-quickset reference 18238 replaced it.

Dial and Face Design

This example carries a champagne dial with a flat profile and applied baton (stick) hour markers in gold. The hour and minute hands are gold baton hands, with a gold sweep seconds hand. The finish is a warm gold tone consistent with the champagne configuration.

The day aperture sits at 12 o’clock and the date aperture at 3 o’clock, each framed within the dial. The day is spelled out in full and, on this generation, was offered in a wide selection of languages specified at the point of sale. The date is magnified by the Cyclops lens on the crystal above it.

Printed dial text reads ROLEX beneath the coronet at 12 o’clock, then OYSTER PERPETUAL, DAY-DATE, and the SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED designation above 6 o’clock. The applied markers and the two calendar apertures are the defining elements of the face.

Case and Bezel

The case is 36 mm in diameter, round, in solid 18 ct yellow gold, with a screw-down caseback. Lug width is 20 mm. The profile is the classic Day-Date form with a fluted bezel machined from the same gold as the case.

The crystal is flat sapphire with a Cyclops magnification lens over the date at 3 o’clock. This generation was the first Day-Date to use sapphire rather than acrylic. The crown is a Twinlock screw-down type, and the case is rated to 100 metres of water resistance.

The fluted bezel is decorative rather than a working complication. It is fixed and does not rotate, and its ridged surface frames the dial. The 18038 designation specifically identifies the fluted-bezel, yellow gold configuration of this reference generation.

Bracelet and Clasp

This reference is fitted to the President bracelet, reference 8385, in 18 ct yellow gold. The President is a three-piece, semi-circular link design built specifically for the Day-Date. On this generation the centre links are hollow, which keeps the bracelet lighter than the solid-link President introduced on later references.

The bracelet closes with a concealed Crownclasp, a folding clasp hidden within the links so the pattern runs unbroken across the wrist. It is released by lifting the coronet on the clasp cover. The bracelet uses 55B end links to meet the 36 mm case and tapers slightly toward the clasp.

The bracelet is sized by removing full links to preserve the symmetry of the pattern. This generation of the President predates the later comfort-extension systems and is sized by link removal alone.

Movement and Functionality

The 18038 is powered by the Rolex caliber 3055, an automatic movement produced specifically for the Day-Date. It carries 27 jewels, beats at 28,800 vph, and is a certified chronometer (COSC). The published power reserve is approximately 42 hours.

The 3055 uses bi-directional automatic winding and a free-sprung balance with a Breguet overcoil hairspring, Glucydur balance wheel, and Microstella regulating screws. It is a single-quickset movement: the date can be advanced independently through the second crown position, while the day is not quickset and is set by advancing the hands through midnight. Both the day and date change instantaneously at midnight.

To set the watch, the crown unscrews and pulls out to a first position for the quickset date and to a further position for hand-setting the time, which is also how the day is advanced. Functions are hours, minutes, seconds, instantaneous day at 12 o’clock, and instantaneous date at 3 o’clock.

Materials of the Watch

The case, fluted bezel, caseback, and crown are solid 18 ct yellow gold. The President bracelet and its concealed Crownclasp are also 18 ct yellow gold. The crystal is sapphire, chosen for scratch resistance over the acrylic used on the previous generation.

The dial furniture, the applied baton markers and the baton hands, is gold-toned to match the champagne dial. The construction is a full precious-metal build from case to clasp, with sapphire the only non-gold structural material on the watch.

This 1979 example falls in the earlier window, so the first-generation green hinged box with a cream or beige fitted interior and matching outer carton is the era-correct packaging. The green presentation styles that Rolex introduced in later decades are not correct for the original sale of this watch, and a modern box on an example of this age indicates a later replacement rather than the packaging it left the dealer in.

Original Warranty

The watch was sold with a punched paper guarantee certificate, completed and stamped by the authorised dealer at the point of sale, with the case serial recorded on the document. This paper format predates the credit-card-style guarantee Rolex introduced in the mid-2000s. The original manufacturer guarantee on any 1979 example has long since expired.

On-Wrist Feel

The 36 mm case wears as a classic mid-size dress watch and sits flat under a cuff. The solid gold case and bracelet give it noticeable weight for its size, more than a comparable steel watch of the same dimensions. The hollow-link President of this generation is lighter than the later solid-link version.

The 20 mm lug width and the tapering President bracelet keep the watch centred on the wrist. It suits a wide range of wrist sizes in the 6.5 to 7.5 inch range and is aimed at formal and business wear rather than tool use. The champagne dial with gold markers reads as a restrained, monochrome gold configuration.
