The Black Bay is Tudor’s dive watch line, built on the brand’s 1950s and 1960s divers. The 41mm steel case, domed profile, oversized winding crown, and snowflake hands all trace back to the “big crown” Tudor Submariner references 7922 and 7924.
The Black Bay collection debuted in 2012. Reference 79230B belongs to the second generation, introduced at Baselworld 2016, when Tudor replaced the ETA-powered 79220 series with its own chronometer-certified manufacture movement.
The “B” suffix marks the blue bezel version. It was sold alongside the black bezel 79230N and the burgundy bezel 79230R, which are separate references. Within the range this sits in the core Black Bay 41 dive family as regular production, not a limited edition.

The dial is a domed matte black surface. Hour markers are applied and filled with luminescent material: a triangle at 12, a rectangular baton at 6, and round dots at the remaining hours, each set in a polished metal surround.
The hands are the Tudor snowflake set: an angular snowflake hour hand, a pointed minute hand, and a thin central seconds hand, all silver-toned with luminescent fill. The seconds hand carries a small luminous dot near its tip.
Dial text runs in two zones. Below 12 sits the Tudor shield emblem above the “TUDOR” and “GENEVE” lines. The lower half reads “200m┬╖660ft”, then “CHRONOMETER” and “OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED”, with “SWISS MADE” at the base. There is no date aperture.
The case is 41mm in 316L stainless steel, round with beveled lugs. The lug tops are brushed and the flanks polished, with a lug-to-lug length of 50mm. It is a tall case for its diameter.
A domed sapphire crystal sits over the dial. The screw-down winding crown is engraved with the Tudor rose and mounted on the prominent crown tube. The caseback is solid steel and screws down. Water resistance is 200 meters.
The bezel is stainless steel fitted with a matte blue anodized aluminum insert. It carries a 60-minute graduated dive scale with a white triangle at the 0/60 position and a coined outer edge. It rotates unidirectionally on a 60-click mechanism. Elapsed time is read by aligning the triangle with the minute hand and tracking the minute hand against the scale.
This reference is fitted with the riveted steel three-link bracelet in 316L stainless steel, brushed, with exposed rivet-style detailing along the outer links that references Tudor’s riveted bracelets of the 1950s and 1960s. The lug width is 22mm.
The bracelet uses a folding clasp with a safety catch and micro-adjustment holes on the blade. This production era predates the Tudor “T-fit” rapid-adjustment clasp used on later Black Bay models.
The bracelet configuration of this reference also shipped with an additional woven fabric strap. The same reference was offered on an aged leather strap under a separate suffix code.
The watch runs the Calibre MT5602, an in-house Manufacture Tudor movement. It is automatic and certified as a chronometer by the COSC.
The movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), holds 25 jewels, and delivers a 70-hour power reserve. It uses a bidirectional rotor, a variable inertia balance secured by a traversing bridge with two-point anchoring, and a non-magnetic silicon balance spring. The movement measures 31.8mm in diameter and 6.5mm thick.
Functions are hours, minutes, and central seconds, with no date. The crown is unscrewed from the case to wind and to set the time, then screwed back down to restore water resistance.
The case, bezel ring, and bracelet are 316L stainless steel. The bezel insert is anodized aluminum in blue. The crystal is sapphire, domed over the dial.
The hour markers and hands carry luminescent material. The winding crown is steel with an engraved Tudor rose.
The overall material character is a steel tool-diver build with an aluminum bezel insert rather than ceramic, in keeping with the reference’s vintage design brief.

Reference 79230B kept a single box generation across its production life, with no box change specific to the reference. A complete bracelet-configuration set includes the fabric strap in its dedicated compartment, so a set missing that strap is incomplete against the original delivery.
A 2022 example was sold with Tudor’s five-year international guarantee, which applies to all Tudor watches sold from January 1, 2020 onward. The guarantee is transferable and carries no periodic maintenance requirement. Coverage is recorded on a physical guarantee card that the Official Tudor Retailer completes and dates at the point of sale, carrying the serial and model reference, with the sale registered electronically by the retailer. The card must be presented with the watch for warranty service.

This 2022 example falls under the later card format: an updated guarantee card completed and dated by the retailer and registered electronically at the point of sale, with the physical card and document holder still delivered. The five-year guarantee measured from the 2022 retail date runs into 2027, so original coverage may still be active depending on the exact month of purchase. The completed and dated guarantee card is the primary authenticity document for a full set. A blank, undated, or photocopied card does not carry the same standing.
Reference 79230B ran until the Black Bay 41 line was replaced by the redesigned Master Chronometer Black Bay generation (reference 7941), which introduced a slimmer case, a METAS Master Chronometer movement, and the T-fit clasp.
The watch measures 41mm across with a 50mm lug-to-lug span, placing it in medium-to-large sport-watch territory. The case is tall, measured at roughly 14.8mm, so it sits high on the wrist and reads as a substantial diver rather than a slim everyday piece.
The 22mm lug width and riveted steel bracelet add to the solid, sporty feel. The height limits how easily it slips under a fitted cuff, so it suits casual and sport wear more than formal dress use. It fits a broad range of wrist sizes and suits a wearer who wants a vintage-styled steel diver with real presence.
