About This Watch

The TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition brings racing history to the wrist with a design that’s deeply tied to motorsport culture. Inspired by the Gulf-liveried Porsche 917K driven in the 1971 film Le Mans, this square-cased chronograph blends vintage racing flair with modern watchmaking through an in-house Heuer 02 movement.

Its colors, case shape, and layout all trace back to one of the most iconic moments in motorsport and cinema.

Before we get into the case, dial, and movement, let’s rewind and explore the origins of this fan-favorite model.

TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf CBL2115 Hands-On | Racing Heritage Perfected

History of the TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition

When it first launched in 1969, the Monaco challenged expectations with its square shape, sharp angles, and one of the earliest automatic chronograph movements. At the time, a square case with a water-resistant design was unheard of. It looked different, wore differently, and gave Monaco its own lane in the racing watch world.

The connection between Heuer, Gulf, and Porsche took shape in the early 1970s. Gulf Oil sponsored the Porsche 917K race car, and that car became famous in the film Le Mans when Steve McQueen wore it while driving on screen. His racing suit in the movie showed the Heuer logo, and the car carried Gulf’s signature colors: light blue with orange and dark blue striping. This moment created one of the most recognizable pairings in racing and watch culture.

Years later, in 2007, Tag Heuer brought that look into its lineup by releasing the first Monaco Gulf Special Edition. It was the start of a series that would be updated and revisited in different forms over time. In 2022, the brand introduced a new version (the CBL2115.FC6494) this time powered by the in-house Heuer 02 movement. Compared to earlier Gulf models, this edition takes a cleaner, more modern approach while keeping the connection to its racing background intact.

Now that you know where the Monaco Gulf Special Edition comes from, let’s take a closer look at the case and strap design that define how this watch wears and feels on the wrist.

Case and Strap Design of the Monaco Gulf Special Edition

Tag Heuer CBL2115.FC6494 bottom strap / bracelt

The Monaco Gulf Special Edition comes in a 39mm by 39mm stainless steel case, but don’t let the numbers fool you – the square shape and taller build make it feel larger on the wrist. It measures around 13.8mm thick, and the lug-to-lug span stretches about 47.4mm, giving the watch a wide stance that’s easy to notice.

The square stainless steel case features vertically brushed surfaces across the top and sides, with high-polished bevels along the edges that catch the light at different angles. This contrast between finishes helps define the case shape clearly and gives each surface its own visual weight. The short lugs are angled slightly downward, helping the watch sit flat on the wrist despite its height, while the squared edges emphasize its bold profile without feeling bulky. Protecting the dial is a domed, beveled sapphire crystal, which adds a retro look, though it lacks anti-reflective coating, something to be aware of if you’re often in direct sunlight.

Looking through the back of the case, you’ll see a flat sapphire window held in place by four screws, offering a clear view of the in-house movement inside. The see-through caseback puts the rotor and column wheel on display, while keeping the watch sealed and secure. With a 100-meter water resistance rating, it’s built for everyday use and can easily handle rain, splashes, or even a swim.

The strap brings the Gulf theme to life. It is made of perforated blue calfskin leather with bright orange lining on the inside. The holes give it that retro racing look, but they also help with airflow, especially in warm conditions. Securing the strap is a polished steel folding clasp with double push buttons for safety and ease of use. It holds well on the wrist without being bulky.

Next, let’s shift to the dial, where the Gulf edition introduces subtle changes that give this Monaco its own identity.

Breaking Down the TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Dial

The dial on the Monaco Gulf Special Edition stands out with a dark blue sunray finish that reflects light across its square surface. Unlike earlier Gulf versions that featured wide, center-mounted stripes, this model keeps things cleaner with two thin vertical stripes along the right side of the dial. The updated color combination (dark blue, turquoise, and orange) gives it a fresh look while still capturing the energy of vintage racing.

At the top of the dial, the usual hour marker is replaced with a polished “60”, which references the racing numbers found on classic Gulf-liveried Porsche cars. Just beneath it sits the vintage-style TAG Heuer logo, while the Gulf logo is positioned above the date window at 6 o’clock, printed in white for a sharper contrast against the dial.

Two subdials are placed horizontally at 3 and 9 o’clock. The 30-minute chronograph counter on the right has a silver opaline finish with turquoise and orange detailing, including an orange-accented hand. The 12-hour counter on the left matches the silver tone and also uses an orange hand to tie the look together. The small seconds display is more understated, positioned just above the date window at 6 o’clock.

For timekeeping, the watch uses polished rhodium-plated hour markers and hands, all of which are filled with Super-LumiNova. Small lume dots are positioned next to each hour marker on the minute track, giving off a clear glow in low light without distracting from the rest of the dial.

With the visual identity fully explored, it’s time to look beneath the dial to see what powers this racing-inspired watch.

What Powers the Monaco Gulf Special Edition

Tag Heuer CBL2115.FC6494 caseback

At the core of the Monaco Gulf Special Edition is the Calibre Heuer 02, an automatic chronograph movement developed entirely in-house by TAG Heuer. It runs at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) and stores up to 80 hours of power when fully wound, making it reliable even after a long weekend off the wrist.

This movement is built with a column wheel and vertical clutch, two features that help the chronograph start and stop smoothly with precise engagement. The pushers require a firm press and give a noticeable click, which adds to the tactile experience when using the stopwatch function.

Through the sapphire caseback, you can see the movement in action. The rotor is finished in matte black with engraved markings, and the column wheel is painted in Gulf orange – a subtle detail that ties the movement back to the watch’s racing roots without overdoing the theme.

In terms of functions, the Calibre Heuer 02 delivers everything you’d expect from a modern chronograph. It supports:

  • Central hours and minutes
  • Central chronograph seconds
  • Running seconds at 6 o’clock
  • 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock
  • 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock
  • Date display at 6 o’clock

Is the TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Comfortable to Wear?

Tag Heuer CBL2115.FC6494 crown side case with bracelet

Wearing the TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition feels different from the start – it’s square, sporty, and built to stand out from more traditional chronographs. The flat sides, short lugs, and sharp corners give the case a structured feel that sits wide on the wrist. Combined with its height and 47.4mm lug span, the watch takes up space but still wears comfortably and stays balanced.

Although the case measures 39mm across, the square shape makes it feel larger than a typical round watch of the same size. The lug-to-lug distance is about 47.4mm, and the overall height is around 15mm, including the crystal. Even with that height, the flat caseback helps the watch sit low and stable on the wrist, especially when worn snug.

For wrists between 6.5 and 7.5 inches, the Monaco Gulf wears with a noticeable but balanced feel. It has enough surface area to catch attention, but it doesn’t feel top-heavy. The perforated blue leather strap adds comfort by letting air pass through, which is helpful in warmer settings or longer wear. Over time, the strap becomes softer and more flexible, adapting to the wrist naturally.

Some wearers have mentioned that the folding clasp can feel sharp at the edges, especially when the strap is still stiff. That can be addressed with a quick adjustment by a watchmaker or a strap replacement if needed.

If you’re after something slim and quiet, this isn’t that kind of watch. But if you want a chronograph that makes an impression and connects back to racing history, the Monaco Gulf Special Edition delivers that experience from the moment it hits your wrist.

Should You Buy the Monaco Gulf Special Edition?

There’s something nostalgic about this Monaco – like spotting a Porsche in Gulf racing colors speeding down the track or remembering the first time you saw Le Mans. It is built for people who feel that connection, whether they lived it or just admired it from afar. If you’ve always wanted a piece that nods to motorsport without needing to explain itself, this one might already be calling your name.

Irving and the team at Majestix Collection provided a professional beginning to end process for securing my Royal Oak. They filmed a highly professional video walking me through the watch, and negotiated a fair price. After purchasing, they filmed another video showing how they packed the watch to be shipped with care, which was delivered to my apartment the next morning. The watch was delivered quickly, in perfect condition, and sized to my wrist. Highly recommend Majestix Collection and Irving for your next watch purchase.
