The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116503 is the two-tone version of the modern Daytona chronograph, built in Yellow Rolesor, Rolex’s pairing of Oystersteel and 18 ct yellow gold. It is a chronograph designed to time short events and read average speed over a measured distance using the tachymetric scale on the bezel.
It was introduced at Baselworld 2016, at the same fair that saw the launch of the steel and Cerachrom 116500LN. The 116503 replaced the previous two-tone Daytona, reference 116523, carrying over the 40 mm case, the solid gold tachymeter bezel, and the in-house Calibre 4130, while updating the bracelet, clasp, and dial finishing.
Within the Daytona line at the time, the 116503 sat between the all-steel 116500LN and the solid gold and platinum references, offering a gold and steel configuration under a single reference number with several dial options.
The reference was produced from 2016 until 2023, when the Daytona line was updated to the six-digit 12×503 generation with the Calibre 4131 movement at Watches and Wonders 2023.

This example carries the champagne dial with a sunburst finish. Applied 18 ct yellow gold baton hour markers sit around the dial, each filled with luminescent material, with a printed minute track on the outer edge and a tachymetric scale printed on the inner flange.
The chronograph uses three recessed sub-dials against the champagne base: a small running seconds register at 6 o’clock, a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock, and a 12-hour chronograph counter at 9 o’clock. The sub-dials share the champagne tone of the main dial and are framed with gold outer rings and concentric guilloché.
The hands are 18 ct yellow gold batons with luminescent fill for the hour and minute, plus a central chronograph seconds hand. The word DAYTONA is printed in red in an arc above the 6 o’clock sub-dial.
Dial text reads ROLEX beneath the coronet at 12 o’clock, followed by OYSTER PERPETUAL, SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER, OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED, and COSMOGRAPH. SWISS MADE is printed at the base of the dial below the 6 o’clock register.
The case is the 40 mm Oyster in Yellow Rolesor, with an Oystersteel monobloc middle case and 18 ct yellow gold elements. The surfaces combine brushed and polished finishing, with the gold crown, pushers, and bezel set against the largely steel case body.
The bezel is fixed and made from a solid block of 18 ct yellow gold, engraved with a tachymetric scale graduated to 400 units per hour. It is a metallic engraved bezel rather than a ceramic insert. The scale converts an elapsed time measured over a known distance into a speed reading, and does not rotate.
The winding crown is a screw-down Triplock with a triple gasket sealing system, and both chronograph pushers are screw-down. The crystal is scratch-resistant sapphire, without a date magnifier. The case back is solid and screw-down. Water resistance is 100 metres.
The 116503 is fitted with the three-link Oyster bracelet in Yellow Rolesor, with brushed Oystersteel outer links and polished 18 ct yellow gold centre links. The bracelet uses solid end links at the case.
The clasp is a folding Oysterlock safety clasp with the Easylink comfort extension, a 5 mm tool-free adjustment inside the clasp that lets the wearer lengthen or shorten the fit by one increment. On the two-tone Daytona, the Daytona family Oyster bracelet ships with roughly nineteen links across both sides, sized by removing links from the 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock halves.
The 20 mm lug width and the two-tone Oyster are standard for this reference. The 116503 was offered only on this bracelet.
The movement is the Rolex Calibre 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph designed and manufactured in-house by Rolex. It replaced the earlier Zenith-based Calibre 4030 when it was introduced in 2000 and powered the Daytona through this reference’s production run.
The calibre runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), holds 44 jewels, and delivers approximately 72 hours of power reserve. It uses a column wheel and a vertical clutch to engage the chronograph, and a Parachrom hairspring for resistance to shocks and magnetic fields. It is a Superlative Chronometer, certified to a precision of -2/+2 seconds per day after casing, with COSC certification as the base standard.
Functions are centre hour, minute, and chronograph seconds hands, a small seconds hand at 6 o’clock, a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, and a 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock. The chronograph is started and stopped with the pusher at 2 o’clock and reset with the pusher at 4 o’clock, both of which unscrew before use and screw back down to preserve water resistance.
The case body and outer bracelet links are Oystersteel, Rolex’s corrosion-resistant steel from the 904L family used across its professional line. The bezel, crown, pushers, and bracelet centre links are 18 ct yellow gold. Together these two materials make up Yellow Rolesor, Rolex’s registered term for its gold and steel combination.
The crystal is synthetic sapphire, chosen for scratch resistance. The applied hour markers and hands are 18 ct yellow gold with a luminescent coating. The dial furniture, including the sub-dial rings, is gold-toned to match the case metal.
The overall material character is a durable steel core dressed with solid gold on the wear surfaces, giving a warmer, more formal appearance than the all-steel Daytona while retaining the steel case structure.

Rolex updated its presentation box design during the 116503 production window, so a full set may carry either the earlier or the later green box depending on the year it was sold. A generic or wrong-era box on a full-set listing is a completeness point to check, since the box style should broadly track the watch’s sale period.
Examples sold new during this reference’s run carried Rolex’s five-year international guarantee, which applied to Rolex purchases from around mid-2015 onward. Coverage was recorded on a plastic, chip-embedded guarantee card in the credit-card format Rolex adopted in place of the earlier paper certificate. The card is dated and stamped by the authorised dealer at the point of sale and is the primary purchase document for the watch.

The five-year guarantee on an example sold new in 2023 runs to approximately 2028, so a 2023-dated card may still be within its original coverage window depending on the exact sale date. A stamped, dated card matching the watch is the main authenticity document for a full set; a blank or mismatched card is a point to verify.
The 116503 was discontinued in 2023 when Rolex updated the Daytona line to the six-digit reference generation with the Calibre 4131 movement. It is no longer part of the current Rolex catalogue.
