The Rolex Air-King 116900 is a 40mm time-only automatic watch in Oystersteel, sitting in the professional/tool end of the Rolex lineup rather than the entry-level slot the Air-King name once held. It continues the aviation theme the Air-King line has carried since the 1940s, when the name was applied to pilots’ watches, and pairs that with an antimagnetic case and movement shared with the Milgauss.
It was unveiled at Baselworld 2016, reviving the Air-King collection after the previous 34mm generation left the catalogue in 2014. The reference marked a full redesign rather than a continuation: the case grew to 40mm, the movement became antimagnetic, and the dial moved from a plain three-hand layout to an aviation instrument design.
At launch it was positioned as one of the more accessible steel Oyster Perpetual sport models, alongside the Explorer and Oyster Perpetual references of the era. It was produced as a single configuration for its whole run and was discontinued in 2022, when it was replaced by the reference 126900.
The dial is glossy black lacquer with a mixed marker layout. Applied 18 carat white gold numerals sit at 3, 6 and 9 in the Explorer-style arrangement, with a large luminous inverted triangle at 12. Around the outer edge a full minute scale runs from 5 to 55 in a speedometer-style font, printed in white.
The hour and minute hands are 18 carat white gold Mercedes hands filled with Chromalight. The central seconds hand is green with a matching green counterweight. The Rolex coronet at 12 is rendered in yellow gold and the “Rolex” wordmark below it is printed in green, a colour combination not used on other current Rolex dials.
Printed dial text reads OYSTER PERPETUAL below the coronet, with the “Air-King” script and SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED in the lower half, and SWISS MADE at 6. The rehaut carries the engraved repeating ROLEX inscription with the serial number at 6. The Chromalight lume on the hands and 12 triangle displays a blue glow in the dark.
The case is the Oyster case shared with the Milgauss: a round 40mm Oystersteel case with a satin-brushed finish and polished flanks. It carries a soft iron inner case around the movement, which adds thickness relative to a standard Oyster and gives the reference its antimagnetic shielding. Measured thickness is approximately 13.2mm with a lug-to-lug of about 49mm.
The crystal is flat sapphire with no Cyclops magnifier over the position where a date would sit, since the watch has no date. The bezel is a smooth, polished, fixed Oystersteel bezel with no scale or timing function; it is decorative rather than a working complication.
The crown is a screw-down Twinlock crown, and this reference has no crown guards, leaving a smoother case flank than the successor 126900. The caseback is a solid, screw-down Oystersteel back. Water resistance is 100 metres.
The bracelet is a three-piece-link Oyster bracelet in Oystersteel with solid end links. On this reference it is finished entirely in satin brushing across the links, without the polished centre links seen on the Milgauss version of the same bracelet.
It closes with a folding Oysterclasp, which has a cover but not the additional folding safety catch of the Oysterlock. The successor reference 126900 upgraded to the Oysterlock safety clasp; the 116900 uses the Oysterclasp throughout its run.
The clasp integrates the Easylink comfort extension, which allows the bracelet to be lengthened or shortened by approximately 5mm without tools. The lug width is 20mm.
The movement is the Rolex Caliber 3131, an in-house automatic. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), carries 31 jewels, and holds a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. Winding is bidirectional via the perpetual rotor.
It is the same antimagnetic caliber used in the Milgauss. It combines a blue Parachrom hairspring with a soft iron inner case that acts as a Faraday cage, shielding the movement from magnetic fields. The caliber is COSC certified and finished to Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer standard, with a stated accuracy of -2/+2 seconds per day after casing.
Functions are hours, minutes and central sweep seconds only. There is no date, no running-seconds subdial, and no bezel or crown complication to operate; the crown sets the time in the usual pulled-out position and screws back down against the case for water resistance.
The case, bezel and bracelet are Oystersteel, Rolex’s name for the 904L grade of stainless steel it uses across its steel watches, chosen for corrosion resistance and the way it holds a polish. The crystal is synthetic sapphire, which resists scratching.
The applied 3, 6 and 9 numerals and the Mercedes hands are 18 carat white gold. The luminous material on the hands and the 12 triangle is Chromalight, Rolex’s proprietary luminescent compound. The soft iron inner case that provides the antimagnetic shielding is an internal component not visible from outside.
The overall material specification is standard modern Rolex steel-sport construction, with the addition of the internal soft iron shield and solid white gold dial furniture.

The presentation box changed at the factory during the run. Examples from 2016 to 2020 shipped in the green lacquered Oyster box with a two-tier tray; examples from 2021 to 2022 shipped in the redesigned deeper green box with a wave-textured lid that Rolex rolled out across its range. Matching the box generation to the watch’s production year is what a set described as complete is judged on, along with the dated guarantee card and the green swing tag.
The Air-King 116900 shipped with Rolex’s 5-year international guarantee, which applied to the entire production run. Rolex had extended its guarantee from two years to five years for purchases from July 2015, before this reference launched, so every 116900 carried the five-year term rather than the older two-year term.
The guarantee took the form of a credit-card-style plastic guarantee card, dealer-stamped and dated at the point of sale, which by this era had replaced the older paper certificate. This card is the primary authenticity document for the set.

The credit-card-style International Guarantee card was used across the entire run, so the card format itself does not date an example; the dealer stamp and activation date on it do. The 5-year window runs out five years after the individual watch’s sale date, so examples sold between 2016 and roughly September 2021 are now outside their original warranty, while later-sold examples may remain within it as of 2026. A stamped, date-activated guarantee card matched to the watch is the key document for a full-set example; a blank or missing card is a gap in the set.
The reference was replaced in the catalogue by the Air-King 126900 in 2022.

The Air-King 116900 was produced in a single configuration for its entire run: a 40mm Oystersteel case with a smooth polished bezel, one glossy black dial with white gold 3-6-9 numerals and the yellow-and-green Rolex signature, the Caliber 3131 movement, and an all-brushed Oystersteel Oyster bracelet with a folding Oysterclasp. It should not be confused with the successor reference 126900, which shares the 40mm case concept but uses the Caliber 3230, adds crown guards, and fits an Oysterlock clasp, nor with the earlier 34mm Air-King references, whose specifications do not carry across.
