Emmanuel Gueit was twenty three years old when he drew the Offshore, and Basel called it the Beast in 1993. Forty four millimeters is where that bloodline peaked, right up until Audemars Piguet retired the size and moved the family down to forty three. Collectors still hunting the full size Offshore are hunting a closed catalog.

Presents itself in mint condition with little to no signs of wear. Slate grey Mega Tapisserie runs wall to wall, its silvered counters sunk into the grid and its white gold markers throwing light by day and burning green once the room goes dark. Black ceramic wraps the bezel, the crown and both pushers, brushed to a fine grain and pinned down by eight hexagonal screws, and that ceramic is the entire argument for this variant over its steel and gold cousins. Titanium carries the case, mirror bevels cutting each flank so the metal swings from matte to gloss every time the wrist turns.

Functions include hours, minutes, small seconds, date, chronograph, and a BASE 1000 tachymeter. Unscrew the ceramic crown at three o’clock and turn it in place to wind by hand. Pull to the first click and turn to quick set the date. Pull to the second click to set the time. Upper pusher starts and stops the chronograph, lower pusher snaps every counter back to zero, with elapsed minutes at nine, elapsed hours at six, and running seconds at twelve. Sapphire front and back puts the self winding Calibre 3126/3840 on open display, and the watch holds water resistance to 100 meters.

Offshore never asked permission. Gueit’s Beast rewrote what a luxury sports watch was allowed to weigh, Schwarzenegger strapped one on for End of Days, and a whole generation of collectors learned that presence beats politeness. Full size was the last word in that argument, and Audemars Piguet has already closed the book on it. Anyone waiting for it to come back around should know that it is not coming back, and that this one is sitting right here.
