Launched in 1945 for Rolex’s fortieth anniversary, the Datejust was the first self-winding chronometer to show the date in a window, and the Jubilee took its name from the same jubilee. Harrison Ford wore a Roman-dial 36 on a Jubilee in Frantic, and the formula has not needed fixing since. Collectors who own the sports references land here eventually, hunting the one piece that needs no introduction and gets none.
Presents itself in brand new condition with no signs of wear. Silver sunray fills the dial, its grooves brushed outward from the center so light lands differently with every turn of the wrist, and twenty-four diamonds sit in the 18k gold VI and IX. Solid 18k gold catches that same light at the fluted bezel, whose grooves once screwed it down to seal the case and now exist purely to show off. Five-piece Jubilee links carry it home, three polished gold down the center flanked by two brushed steel, folding over the wrist without a seam.
Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, and date. Powering it is the Calibre 3235, thirty-one jewels and seventy hours of reserve, so it still runs Monday morning after Friday night, driving a date that snaps over instantly at midnight under a Cyclops lens magnifying it two and a half times. Screwed down at three o’clock, the 18k yellow gold Twinlock crown unscrews to position one for winding, pulls out one click to position two to quick-set the date, and one click more to position three to set the hands with the seconds hand held still. Setting it after a long rest follows one order: park the hands near 6:30, clear of the date gearing that engages between nine at night and three in the morning, quick-set the date to yesterday, then walk the hands past midnight until yesterday flips to today and on to the right time. Push the crown home and screw it down to seal 100 meters of water resistance, then flip out the Easylink inside the Oysterclasp whenever you want 5mm more room without tools.
Comes as a complete set, double-boxed with 2026 warranty card, card wallet, warranty booklet, Oyster Perpetual Datejust instruction booklet, green Superlative Chronometer seal tag, and white hang tag.
Rolesor was never a compromise between steel and gold, but a name Rolex trademarked in 1933 and has spent every decade since refining. Diamonds at six and nine, and nowhere else, mark the restraint that separates a collector’s Datejust from a jeweler’s, and 36mm is the size the model was drawn at. Two-tone came back the way vinyl came back, quietly and then all at once, and the factory film on this one is still waiting for the first person willing to peel it.
