Every collector knows the two steel sports watches everyone fights over, then quietly discovers there is a third one wearing a Maltese cross. Named for the spirit of travel that has run through the Maison since 1755, Overseas was built for people who actually go places rather than photograph a watch on a desk. Anyone who has ever sprinted through a terminal like Tom Cruise to make a connection will understand this one on sight.
Presents itself in mint condition with little to no signs of wear. Set against lacquered blue that shifts from bright to deep navy as the wrist turns, the applied white gold hour markers throw light back like tiny mirrors. Framed by a six sided bezel drawn from the Maltese cross, polished top surfaces meet satin brushed flanks along a line so crisp you can feel where one finish ends and the next begins. Wrapped in deep blue alligator with matching stitching, the strap softens all that steel geometry into something you can wear to dinner without thinking about it.
Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, date, and a second time zone with day and night indication. Sitting at three o’clock, the screw down crown must be unscrewed before it will pull out. Give it around forty turns first if the watch has been resting, because the self winding caliber 5110 DT carries roughly sixty hours of power reserve and behaves best fully wound. Pull the crown to its first position to jump the local hour hand forward in one hour steps while leaving the second time zone hand and day and night indicator synchronized with home time. Pull the crown all the way out to set the minutes, and the seconds hand stops so you can start on the dot. Just below the crown, a screw down pusher advances the pointer date at six o’clock one day per press, so unscrew it, set the date to yesterday, then walk the hour hand forward past midnight to arrive on today without ever forcing the date backward. Screw the pusher and the crown fully back down when you are finished and the one hundred fifty meters of water resistance is right back where it should be.
Comes as a full set, triple boxed with Chinese-market warranty card, three booklets, stainless steel bracelet, blue rubber strap, and a second folding clasp.
Stamped with the Hallmark of Geneva, a certification only a handful of Maisons still submit to, this piece was judged on both finishing and real world performance as a complete watch rather than on looks alone. Vacheron Constantin has been building without interruption since 1755, which is a sentence no other watchmaker on earth gets to write. For the collector who has already told the story of the other two, this is the one that finishes the conversation.
