Discontinued in favor of the current 39mm in-house version, the IW391002 is now the last of its breed: the final 42mm dress chronograph from one of cinema’s most photographed Swiss houses. Cate Blanchett, Ewan McGregor, and Christoph Waltz all fronted the Portofino’s “Timeless” campaign cementing this line as IWC’s red-carpet collection.

Presents itself in mint condition with little to no signs of wear. The glossy black lacquered dial reads like the gloss-black piano in a spy movie villain’s lair as it is deep, reflective, and just dressy enough to make a tuxedo-wearing spy nervous. The three snailed silver subdials sit in perfect symmetry against that black field, each one finished with concentric brushing that catches light in a way flat printing never could. Mushroom-shaped chronograph pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock mimic the beautiful switches from 1960s Italian sports car cockpits.

Functions include hours, minutes, small seconds, day, date, and chronograph with 30-minute and 12-hour subdials. The screw-down crown at 3 o’clock quick-sets the date when rotated clockwise in the middle position and the day-of-week when rotated counter-clockwise, with hacking time-setting in the outer position. The mushroom pusher at 2 o’clock starts and stops the chronograph and the bottom pusher at 4 o’clock resets all three chronograph hands snapping back to zero in unison. The Caliber 79320 automatic movement runs at 28,800 vph with a 44-hour power reserve.
